I have mentioned before how spooky winter was in the olden days. The last of a fallen animals body heat leaving their body, even the brief fog humans made as they breathed in the chili air had people thinking of spirits. Also, the improper storage of the last harvest caused wonderful hallucinations. They would pile up their grains and the dampness caused mildew; also, rye was often contaminated with ergots, which scientists now believe is the cause of the Salem tragedy. Charles Dickens was, of course, born quite a bit after that occurred. Still, the mists and, by that time, ‘nose powder’ (and the fact that Dickens was an English novelist with rock star status), helped to make A Christmas Carol as popular as it became.

Charles was not only an awesome author but an incredible actor, making him the best of storytellers. He would pack the crowd when doing his book tours, Charles Dickens acting out his own words on the stage was a sight to see. A Christmas Carol was published in 1843, just a few decades after much of America started celebrating Christmas again ( The Puritans saw Christmas just as a time for the poor to wassail the rich, and also believed that Dec the 25th became the popular date to celebrate the birth of Christ to cover up the Roman holiday Saturnalia (which was a festive celebration of the God Saturn) many Christian Holidays ‘occur’ during the time of more ‘uncivilized heathens’ Holidays, so nothing new there.

Dickens was inspired to write A Christmas Carol one night after he spoke one night at a charity event for Manchester Athenaeum. He was broken hearted and worried about the outcome of the poor and ignored children. After the event, he roamed the chili, night air streets (it was October after all) and became obsessed with getting his story out in time for Christmas.

A Christmas Carol is still reenacted every year across the nation on many stages. And has been turned into a movie, not once but 49 times! From old cranky men to muppets, to animated versions of Jim Carrey!

The first being put out in 1908, Tom Ricketts was the first screen Scrooge.

RECAP: TWD, S08E07: Time After Time

RECAP: TWD, S08E07: Time After Time

I was really feeling the title of this episode. Really all characters that played a role in this episode has recurrences of some sort.

Rick giving Jadis another chance, and another, oh look and another.
Eugene doing what he sees are his best beats to stay alive . Also his conflection, which grass is greener (or which pickle is greener).
Morgan still helping out.
Michonne needing to check things out.
Daryl gung-ho

DAMMIT Eugene though!

I was hoping against all odds, that he was cozying up to Negan because he had plans to take him down. Naw! Eugene is Negan for sure. In Eugene’s ‘brilliant idiot’ mind Negan is his most likely ‘savior’, he thinks he has better odds of survival on TeamNegan even though he does realize the Saviors are the bad guys. And good Gabriel and them holy sun rays beaming down on you while you were coughing up who knows and telling Eugene to do that right thing. I see that played in his head hard and on repeat. Twice I thought Eugene was going to turn into The Hulk! With the visual shaking, grinding teeth and the fire in his eyes. That is what needs to happen with Eugene, he needs to get so irate/mad/anxious that he warps into a beast (better than the cowardly creature he is currently). I also love how Sasha’s coffin broke him down too. Sasha’s death was hard for him to swallow, and him using her MP3 Player to create this kite/drone creation was downright shitty! I’m glad Dwight shot it down rather than Eugene. GOOD! Dwell on the fact that it was all in vain!

Wasted time, wasted attempt at bravery (against Dwight). I understand why Dwight decided to hoot the drone instead of Eugene also. Dwight does not need to blow his cover, and killing Eugene would throw up a huge flag (or kite in this case). I am wondering though if at some point Negan overheard Dwight telling Eugene he is working for Rick, I would never say that shit out loud, not even in the middle of a desolate field! Too risky. Negan sure was acting like he knew something though. The shit eating grin on Negan’s face when he asked Eugene how it felt to be the second most important person in the sanctuary has me convinced he overheard, or someone else overheard and told him.
Let me also throw in the scene right after Eugene moping, and charges into Gabe’s sick room. Eugene barking at Gabriel like that while Gabriel is sick and dying of who knows what completely done me in. Eugene cannot stand up to anyone unless they are on their deathbed, NICE!

Speaking of which, OMG Gabe cannot die yet!! I love me a gun-toting, zombie killing preacher. I definitely need more of his Boondock Saints moments, where he gives the bad guy a blessing and shoots him down! Lort, is the doctor still alive?!?!?

WOW! Rosita THINKS, gotta be a first. And this time it’s her words that punch Michonne and knocks some sense into her. LOL! I mean, seriously, the look on Michonne face when Rosita’s words dawned on her reminded me of the time Michonne knocked Rick out. LOL! So good, Michonne steps down and it is back to Tara and Daryl, both having very good reasons for wanting Negan dead. But wait…what is this?! :O

Halleluyur, Captain Morgan to the rescue again. 😀 Speaking of senses, right now he is in some good senses.

I do also want to note Jadis’ and Rick’s bond. LOL. At first, while Rick was fighting, and after, the look on Jadis’

Lance Herota as Pole Walker, Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes, Pollyanna McIntosh as Jadis – The Walking Dead _ Season 8, Episode 7 – Photo Credit: Gene Page/AMC

face, I thought she had a hard-on 😉 Come to find out she was just sick of Rick surviving her awful attempts to put him down in these twisted ways. She was just frustrated that Rick keeps winning, she tries taking him out herself by going to shoot him again, not happening. Rick slams her down and she comes face to face (too close for comfort, close enough to learn a good lesson) with her creation.

And by the way, her negotiating skills again LOL I love it. Her wanting to sculpt Rick without the underwear… Oh dear! But why, oh why, did the writers of this episode leave us hanging like this??? If all of those Walkers are indeed all in the Sanctuary now, wouldn’t you still be able to hear their groans? Things to make you say hmmmmm.

Artist of the Month – December 2017: Tony Blake

Artist of the Month – December 2017: Tony Blake

I found December’s AotM because of my love for The Walking Dead once again. 🙂

And even though this was one of the most horrible occurrences on my favorite show, Steven was impressed!

One of the reasons Tony Blake’s art stands out is the fact he uses color pencils! You guys should know by now I love different. 😉

Here is his brief bio:

Tony is from Great Yarmouth in the UK. He is a full-time freelance artist and is currently studying for a degree in art. He is 41 years old. Married with three children.

Our Q&A:

House of Tortured Souls: How long have you been into horror art?
Tony Blake: Always loved horror art from a young age. First ever character I drew was Freddy from a t-shirt my dad brought me.

HoTS: Did you have a teacher or go to art school??
TB: I’m self taught.

HoTS: Who is your favorite monster?
TB: Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund).

HoTS: Do you have booths at conventions or any art galleries?
TB: I do comic cons across the UK and my art was featured in the Z-Nation exhibit at the Spokane Museum of Art.

HoTS: How old were you when you started drawing?
TB: Probably about 5. Once I went to school. It was all I could do as I had problems with reading and writing, I’m dyslexic.

HoTS: What is your favorite method, pencil, charcoal, the blood of innocents?
TB: I use Prismacolor and Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils for the last two years love them.

HoTS: Do you have a fan page? Twitter? Instagram?
TB: Yes!

@tonyblakeart

HoTS: Do you do commissions?
TB: Yes always doing what the customers want.

HoTS: Are you working on something now?
TB: Currently drawing Bill Murray as Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters.

HoTS: What advice would you give anyone interested in starting this career?
TB: Best advice I can give is practice, practice, never give up and always try new styles, and if that doesn’t work sell your soul to the devil.

Throughout the month of December, Tony is selling original pieces $80! :-O #Floored!!

RECAP: TWD, S08E06: The King, The Widow, and Rick

RECAP: TWD, S08E06: The King, The Widow, and Rick

Okay, so we have definitely settled down. This episode again was not so intense, but, of course, TWD will always have an OMG moment! Now we are seeing more of the story grow, and some things being explained.

Our team has a clever way of exchanging notes back and forth while they are split up. I’m digging the new mailboxes. 😉

UMMM, so Jadis feels artsy-fartsy while in the nude, huh? 😕

We see her in her trash-heap homestead in nothing but an apron, while putting together a new metal kitty.

This one looks like it may be a tiger. Does she know that Shiva is dead? And she actually bothers to put on clothes when she finds out it’s Rick??

So Rick offers the Heapsters  (Scavengers) a deal again?!?!? Why would he consider trusting them again? Jadis even questions him about that. Jadan tells him no and has him locked into a cargo box (nude!).

Come to think of it, this whole episode had a Terminus feeling. The metal box, the one Savior talking to Jesus the way that Termite talked to Ty, and the warehouse Michonne and Rosita creep into appeared a lot like Terminus.
Carol goes to talk some sense into the King. As she walks up, Jerry, standing guard, tells her Ezekiel is not taking visitors. Like Carol gives a damn. Jerry tells her, Ezekiel told him he could go, that there was no need for him to be there, Jerry said that is all he had to do.
Gregory steps into his old study to tell Maggie to get rid of the Saviors. That there are too many wolves amongst the sheep. HA!
Rosita and Michonne going off when they are supposed to stay put and heal. On their way ‘to take a look’ at the Sanctuary, they hear the weirdest music and stop the car. The two follow the sound to a warehouse. Inside they find a male and female Savior talking. The WTF MICHONNE?!?!?! A ball???? After all the times we’ve seen Michonne stealthily creep in and out of places she bumps into a ball and it rolls away letting the bad guys know they are not alone. Great. Now Michonne is in another fight – while healing from the last one!! She really is a good match for Rick, I swear! The male Savior finds Rosita, but boy does she have a surprise for him! The Grenade Launcher! He laughs at her and tells her she knows good and well that she will not use it. WHOOPSIE! But the female Savior gets away in the vehicle, all them damn speakers blasting that crazy ass music to draw in the Walkers. BOOM! Daryl to the rescue! He’s been doing that a lot lately. He ran right into her. 😉 So now we have the 4 Musketeers (Daryl went to Alexandria and picked up Tara to take her to Alexandria) all heading off to ‘end this’.
Of course, Henry would follow Carol! At this point, she needs to come up with a strategy to keep kids away from her! Is this going to be Sam part 2 or Elijah part 2? hopefully neither and he becomes Carl part 2! In real life, the boy that plays Henry is the little brother of the girl that played Sofia.
The Saviors are moved to an outdoor prison inside the walls of the Hilltop. Gregory gets placed in with them, acting like a straight up baby. Suddenly he remembers her name! Long hair Savior goes for one of the Hilltop lady’s gun. Maggie knocks some sense into him. 😉
Carl and new buddy (we learn his name is Saadiq) have near-death experiences in the woods with some Walkers needing redemption. (Did that deer bring up fond memories Carl?) Carl tells him he is taking him to Alexandria even though his father thinks it’s a bad idea.
LOL!!! Carol goes back to see Ezekiel, this time Henry follows. Carol tells Jerry to stand next to Henry, and he does. 🙂 She finds Ezekiel holding Shiva’s chain. Carol breaks down to Ezekiel, and both end up bawling. Ezekiel tells her she can lead the people. Carol tell him he needs to get back to his role.
Aaron talking about Eric to Enid and Maggie. Maggie holding Gracie. Maggie is becoming a babysitter like her sister used to be. I imagine Maggie will breastfeed Gracie, too. When Aaron is leaving, Enid rushes out and begs him to take her along (they, too, are heading to the Sanctuary). This will certainly be interesting!!
At the end of the episode, we see Jadan puts a big A on the metal shipping crate Rick is naked in. Is that for Alexandria? Or Alpha? 😮

Hmmmm……

RECAP: TWD, S08 E05: The Big Scary U

RECAP: TWD, S08 E05: The Big Scary U

Okay, this episode wasn't as intense as the past few weeks, which I'm happy about because I could not handle any more! Not to say it was not intense though - explosions, a mole, Gabriel left alone with Negan, Eugene's cucumbers!! :O

This episode starts off with a flashback of Father Gabriel praying that his death be not a fruitless death and that he goes out with a purpose. And when they are stuck in the hotbox and Negan asks him why did he leave the safety of that car and run back to save Gregory's cowardly ass. Gabe tells Negan that he does not want to die a fruitless death. Gabe also tells Negan he believes his purpose was to hear Negan's confession and to give him a pardon. Gabriel tells Negan of his downfalls, of his cowardly ways of not letting his congregation into the church when they needed in to escape the Walkers at the beginning of the apocalypse. It does work, and Negan loosens up. He tells Gabriel of his wife before the Z.A. He confesses to cheating on her, even when she got sick before the apocalypse, he was galavanting. Negan also mentions he worked with kids. Maybe a teacher or counselor at an alternative or intercity school. Father Gabriel's kind tone, and looking him in his face and not backing down saved him his life. Negan decides Gabe will be his new 'special project'. Not a big surprise there. Negan kept Eugene, he was going to keep Sasha, he even played cat-and-mouse with Carol. What better weapon against someone than one of their team

members? Negan is nothing more than a puppetmaster. And yet as he has his workers bow down when he comes in, and has multiple wives against their will (even killing people to take them wives) and punishing those who rebel by ironing their faces, Negan still thinks he is right and that all is justified. When Gabe was approaching Negan from the back and Negan raised his bat, did he whisper, "Lucille, give me strength"?

Gabe tells Negan he is forgiven, and Negan punches him in his face. I busted out laughing! Perfect.
It was good they did show us Gregory's meeting with Negan and his head Saviors (Negans of the Long Table).

Jayson Warner Smith as Gavin, Austin Amelio as Dwight, Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan - The Walking Dead _ Season 8, Episode 5 - Photo Credit: Gene Page/AMC

I love seeing Gregory squirm.I hope Miss Celie fixed that glass of water Gregory was sipping on. When Negan started yelling and pounding the table with Lucille, I just know Gregory and Eugene both pissed their pants. LOL. Gregory's still as delusional as ever. Especially thinking HE could pull off any stunt. I do wonder what Maggie's purpose for letting him back into the Hilltop was. It is going to be interesting to see what Gregory tries.
Negan mentions Simon backsliding? What is Simon's history? Did Negan beat him into submission?

Now in Gregory's flashback, where Simon brought him breakfast, Simon mentioned something about having a meeting with Negan and brought up that he found out about the Hilltop's 'betrayal' while he was in Alexandria last time. How was it Simon found that out? Still a mole in Alexandria? Or one of the Saviors crept into Alexandria somehow and overheard their plans?
Chaos starts up in the Sanctuary because no one knows for sure if Negan is dead or not. Then generators shut off causing more problems. Everyone is frightened and do not know what they should or what will happen next, and now they are all hot and sweaty so the workers start demanding answers and come up to the second floor ready to fight. It takes a gunshot to get them to calm back down and as soon as they are all silent and still by the gunfire, here comes Negan's whistle from around the corner. All drop to their knees, including Gabriel. Negan assigns Gabe a cell, and Eugene is his 'welcoming committee', bringing him a pillow and other items and finding Gabe in a poor condition. Was Gabe bit? It looks as if his blood sugar dropped too low. Did he get too hot? Is it a stunt? Eugene wants to get him to a doctor ASAP, but Gabe tells him that is the reason he is there. That Maggie's doctor needs to get back to the Hilltop. Gabe may be dying, but he is still looking to serve a purpose.
Now let's get to Rick and Daryl, who got into a fistfight. I'm shocked that this had not happened before.

Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon, Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes - The Walking Dead _ Season 8, Episode 5 - Photo Credit: Gene Page/AMC

Until now. Daryl has gone and done his own things numerous times before. This time Rick was right there to argue with him, and this time there was a ton on both of their backs. Daryl has always been more gung-ho than a thinker and planner. In the middle of this rumble and tumble, the truck carrying the guns, ammo, and dynamite explodes. Well, just great! Okay, the explosion breaks up the fight, but I am curious about the guns. Before the fight, we see Daryl pulling out a long crate, inside is both dynamite and some ammo but no guns. Did the other guns slide further down during the flip down the hill? I'm really not sure what Daryl, says but I can tell he goes off a different direction than Rick. Rick is on foot, I imagine, walking back to Alexandria. Suddenly, we hear a helicopter. A DAMN HELICOPTER!! The look on Rick's face says it all.

Remember that he saw a helicopter at the first of all of this when he got into Atlanta. T-dog told him that was impossible, and since Rick was hallucinating while they were in the prison, he is not sure if the helicopter is real or not. I suspect he follows the helicopter too see if he is delusional gain if for no other reason.

Now I'm like, "Forget this turkey! Show us who owns that damn helicopter!"

RECAP: TWD, S08 E04: Some Guy

RECAP: TWD, S08 E04: Some Guy

OOOOH, MAN!!! What an episode!!! I do not recall an episode any more intense than the one Sunday night!!!
So now we come to King Ezekiel's mirror scene. LOL! We have seen one for so many of our other (some still with us) male characters. I was a bit set back because Ezekiel technically isn't on Rick's team, and he certainly is not a bad guy. I was hoping for a little bit more light in that room since the king was without his shirt and his hair was out of the way. 😉 I'm glad they showed us again how beloved Ezekiel is in The Kingdom and how obedient/loyal Shiva is to him.
Now back up to where we left off last week: the Kingdomians lying dead everywhere outside the warehouse where someone was sniping them off. Suddenly there is movement in the human pile we last saw the King being shoved into, The King is ALIVE!!! His leg is broken ( or perhaps that is a sprain), but other than that he is unscathed! Now comes the reality that all of his followers around him have perished, including Daniel (the red-headed knight) and that affects him deeply, so Ezekiel missed the timing on when he should have scooted to safer grounds. Instead, his shout awoke the dead. Now the King must escape his loved ones while his heart breaks and his leg aches.
Inside the warehouse, we catch up with Carol creeping down a spooky hallway (with a light flickering no less). More signs that the boogeyman has arrived. She discovers where the shots were coming from, and lo! and behold, the weapons that Rick and Daryl went after. Now what to do with all these silly Saviors. No problem for Carol, right?
Back to Ezekiel, who found one gun just in the nick of time to take out one Walker, then, ALAS out of bullets. Keep in mind that this is all happening as he a scooting around. He tries another gun and finds it completely out of bullets. The Walkers (his followers) are closing in on him... WOAH! Where did this guy come from? OH, thank goodness! Welp. that didn't last long. Hey, is that Weird Al? He cut his hair?!? :-O Okay, no... Well, at this angle, this Gunther fellow looks like Jim Carey. I dub him, 'Ace Ventura, Walker Detective'. As puny and pathetic as he may be, he certainly had no problems emotionally beating down the king. Gunther's words sunk Ezekiel into this pitiful pit, and you could actually see the light go out in his eyes.
YES, JERRY!!!!! Jerry is alive!!!Cooper Andrews as Jerry in The Walking Dead / Image: Gene Page.
There is hope!!! OOOOH, how we love Jerry! 😀 He loses his battle axe, but all of our heroes lose their weapons.
Now Carol is behind a vehicle getting gunned down yet again! You tense up and don’t even breathe as you watch. Not because you are frightened she will surely be gunned down, but because you want to see exactly how she works her way out of this situation. She didn't let us down. 🙂 OH, when she spotted Ezekiel and Jerry fighting off Walkers at the gate, though, her well-shit-what-do-I-do look appeared. Those weapons were of the utmost importance, yet the king and Jerry needed help. I was happy she chose to help her buddies but still shouted out, 'Damn!' And the truck drove off with the weapons. Then I heard the bike, even before they showed us that Carol heard the bike and her looked around to see where it was.
Finally, Daryl and Rick show up and take off after the truck.
The truck chase was intense! How do you protect yourself on a bike from gunfire? Luckily, baldy in the back of the truck with the weapons (while none of the Saviors at this point) cannot shoot worth a damn! Daryl does lose control and goes skidding to the shoulder, leaving Rick to get behind the truck for a chase. But wait!!! BOOYAH, fooled you! Rick swerves, and POW! There is Daryl back up on his bike and ready to take the shot. Hmm... Seems like he has no problems hitting his target. So we end up with Rick IN the truck and fighting the driver. I mean, DAMN! Rick gets the driver thrown out of the truck but swerves off the road and rolls down an embankment. Was all of that just for us to lose our hero??? As Daryl runs up to the guardrail and peers over at the truck below, we hear a voice say, 'hey', and see rustling in some weeds growing down the hill. Then out pops Rick - the man with 9 lives.
Speaking of which... 🙁 So back to Carol, Jerry, and Ezekiel trying to make it back on foot. Remember the King has injured his leg and is in agony. Carol leads them to a creek filled with Walkers, all looking like that melted face Walker we were wondering about. In the creek are rusty busted barrels of some type of toxic waste that has left these Walkers looking this way. The creek does not have much in the water department but certainly makes up for it in muddy goop, which makes it impossible for these poor Walkers to get out of the creek. And here it is where Ezekiel pleads for them to leave him and states that he is not worth saving. Jerry was close to tears as he yelled at Ezekiel that he is worth saving. Out of nowhere comes our furry hero to the rescue!! Shiva takes out walkers left and right and allows our pals to get across the creek bed. But it is here that we lose our darling little kitty. Shiva has troubles in the sludge and is easily taken down by a gang of Walkers. That truly was too much for Ezekiel. His whole character will be different now. The Kingdom will become something else as well.
RIP, Shiva.

RECAP: TWD, S08 E02: The Damned

RECAP: TWD, S08 E02: The Damned

Talking about coming out the gate swinging :O Well shooting, not so much swinging.Morgan, from The Walking Dead
Okay, so where the hell are both sides getting all this ammo?!?!?!? Good Lort, that gunfight went on forever!!!
Jesus, Tara, Morgan, and their team were incredible at being stealth. That procedure was awesome! I am thrilled to see them pull off more thought through operations, and they definitely have an advantage when it comes to brains.
Well, nice meeting you, Mara, oh, bye, Mara. That bite to the throat was some Walker foreplay y’all. And is Rick and Daryl at satellite building with Tara and the crew? Or another location? Did I miss something?
Morgan is incredible! He did have a point when he said he doesn't die. Mercy! When he was clearing the wing of the building!! I certainly need Morgan over next time I play COD. That brings back fond memories of meme I made that seems so long ago now. When Morgan came to Aaron and Daryl's rescue with nothing but a stick, I said, “Captain Morgan to the rescue!” Say how crazy he is all you want, he is still alive, he is still badass, he is still my Captain Morgan!!
Why was the Walker in the woods’ skin melting off? I mean that was skin dripped onto his shirt as well, right? His face certainly was melting off. And this slight grin Carol has when Ezekiel speaks - the King makes Carol's Shiva purr. 😉
OH, FOR THE LOVE OF JESUS!!! #Eyeroll Jesus is now too much Morgan with the all-life-is-precious attitude. Even when he is karate kicking the bad guy. Yeah, Morgan has moved too. That Dean definitely needed to be taken down. And how funny it is a savior who pisses his pants when Negan was asking if Rick and his team pissed their pants yet when meeting Negan? I don't ever recall agreeing with Tara before (certainly didn't with the handling of Oceanview) but she was definitely right when it came to taking down Dean right then and there.
Oh, hey, was anyone missing seeing Rick in a fistfight? That was a bunch of rolling, punching, slinging into furniture (speaking of which, I LOL at how that shelf broke) strangling, and sweat running into eyes. But, oh my heart, when Rick found little Gracie. OMG, what a stab to the heart! Gracie's daddy was just there to take care of his baby, that is a tough one to take in.
Oh, hey, there is Morales. :O In our group chat, all I could do was keep on typing, “OMG”. What has happened? WHHYYYYY is he there? Where is his family? Why is he on the wrong team man???? AAAAWWWWW will Eric make it? 🙁
Will Eric make it?
Season 8 is certainly going to be one hell of a ride. See y'all next week.Jerry, The Walking Dead

RECAP: TWD, S08E01: Mercy (100th Episode)

RECAP: TWD, S08E01: Mercy (100th Episode)

W O W! 😯 Just eye bulging WOW!!!!!!
You know, I was so thrilled to have my beloved The Walking Dead

The 100th episode could not have been more amazing, though. I was thrilled that the whole group was back together and organizing an entire operation together. And my, my, my, our crew sure can pull off some amazing stunts, huh! I'm always thinking to myself, 'OH, that is so genius! I'm going to add that to my notes on How to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse'. LOL! It is impressive how much thought goes into this show. I mean, will my geekiness ever become that strong?
Now, allow me to be all over the place with the remainder of this recap (just like the episode).
I did a little bit of a jump on the couch when Carl and Rick were leaving the gas station and a girl walker came shuffling into Rick's view. OMG, it's Summer (Teddy Bear Girl) – talk about coming full circle.
I KNEW Dwight and Daryl were communicating! 😮
Gregory was so pathetic wasn't he?!? The peeping at Negan to see if what Gregory was saying was ballsy enough, and Negan with his “go on'” gesturess. Why, why, why did Father Gabriel feel the need to leave the safety of the car, and risk his neck for Gregory? Gregory did just what I figured he would, and took off in the car without Gabe!
Who is this new kid? I cannot tell if he is sincere or not. Is he safe now? And Rick shooting over his ear. Okay, so you didn't kill the kid with a bullet, but that gunshot will sure as hell draw any nearby Walkers. So the kid is still at risk of dying - only now by Walkers.
OOOOH, the team made it at to where the Sanctuary would get overrun by Walkers. Smooth move indeed!!! But, dammit, Gabriel is stuck in there now! I'm not sure which is better: being outside with Walkers or being inside with Negan.
I'm glad to see Morgan back to work, and (for the moment) sane!
I really wanted to see Carol confront Tobin since she was in Alexandria.
I am so happy TWD is back on, I feel like I just found my favorite blanket again. Come join us on Facebook, we hold group chats during every episode, which is so good to have someone of like to vent with! https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheWalkingDeadHeadsUnite.
Seriously, though, who was the young man at the gas station?

SPOTLIGHT: Justin “Schock” Terrell

SPOTLIGHT: Justin “Schock” Terrell

It is a great honor for me to introduce next HoTS ‘In the Spotlight’ Artist: our own Justin Schock!
Justin has done a tremendous amount in the background for House of Tortured Souls this year, so he well deserves this title – and much more! As with many artists, his talent spills over in more than one genre. He records metal music!
Here is a brief bio of Justin “Schock” Terrell:
horror-artist-inthespotlight-justin- schock-jackolanterns-300x300Schock was a nickname given as a stage name in the early 2000s and kind of just stuck with me all these years… I was born in 1982. I was born and grew up in Anderson, IN. I still live nearby but try to disassociate with the town. Haha! I have one kid, a daughter, who is 9 years old and acts like she’s 14. Kids… I’ll tell ya. Currently, my normal day job is the Loss Prevention Supervisor for Kohl’s in Anderson, IN.
House of Tortured Souls: When did you start drawing?
Justin “Schock” Terrell: I started drawing at a young age, like stupid young. I can remember drawing at 3 years old or so.

horror-artist-inthespotlight-justin- schock-beardskull-300x300

HoTS: What was the first picture you remember doing?
Schock: When I was younger, I would draw comic strips like Garfield and Peanuts while attempting to mock the style. I then moved on around, 4 or 5 years old, drawing Spiderman and Wolverine mostly before developing my own techniques.

horror-artist-inthespotlight-justin- schock-jason-300x300

HoTS: Who inspired you when you began?
Schock: I just started drawing things always utilizing pencil only. I use to not care for markers and such. The traditional look of pencil appealed to me. I honestly can’t say if I had anyone influence. There were, of course, comic books and cartoons, but I never got the names of the artists. My uncle, Mike Ball is an amazing traditional artist. I mean he doesn’t use computers. He was always showing me tricks as a kid, and I admired a lot of the work he did.
HoTS: Who do you follow now?
Schock: Now that I’m older and pay attention to things, some of my favorite artists are James Rowe, Alex Ross, Nikki Bruin, and Scott Anderson. Then there is this one dude, not sure of his real name, but his store is called Electric Zombie. And Ghoulish Gary is hands down amazing, as is Jason Edmiston. Really, there are a lot of insane artists out there.
HoTS: Do you have a favorite creep?
Schock: Favorite creep…hmm well I’m always all over the monsters. It’s hard to pick, ya know? Ever go shopping and you see Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein stuff everywhere, but then there’s that one off Leatherface item, so you’re torn? Do I pick up the traditional monster thing? Or get the slasher? I’m a horror fan, and it’s just too hard to pick.

horror-artist-inthespotlight-justin- schock-lollipop-300x300

HoTS: What is your most prized piece?
Schock: I have a couple pieces that are prized. One is a full pencil/colored pencil piece I did of Reagen from The Exorcist, and the other is a non-horror pencil drawing of ballerina legs/shoes. Both of those are amazing to me because I didn’t know I could produce such work.

horror-artist-inthespotlight-justin- schock-ballerina-300x300

HoTS: Do you do art shows, comic cons, or any vendor markets?
Schock: I have never done any of the cons or markets namely because it takes a lot of money to get started and I totally do not have that kind of loot. But one day, I will be all over it. I have never done an art show. The art world is a cruel mistress. Fun fact about my region of the world, er, the city: I was told by an artist collective here I was not allowed to join their little club of artists because of my work being mainly horror-influenced. And I went from traditional pencil and paint to almost all exclusively digital coloring, even using Wacom pens to draw without paper. Very snobby artists here. So art shows would only happen, again, if I had the money for it, and if I was more well known.
HoTS: Are you working on something now?
Schock: As of now, I am working on some watercolor paintings, the annual Drawlloween pictures which I am doing all pencil this year, images for HoTS. As well as working on my next record. I make hardcore/metal music also. All written and recorded by myself called xSCHOCKx, which can be found here: xschockx.bandcamp.com I jump around mediums, drawing, painting, music and even writing. Working on a collection of short stories with a friend. No title yet, but its very X-rated and scary all at once.

horror-artist-inthespotlight-justin- schock-regan-300x300

HoTS: Do you do commission work?
Schock: I do, indeed, do commission work. I’m always open to anything graphic design in advertising, drawings, logo design, the list goes on and on. A list of services and prices can be found on my site (listed below), and it does not have to be limited to horror works. That’s just my thing. I’ve done stuff for the MS people, Diabetic Youth Foundation, and even random churches. A good artist doesn’t limit his focus.
HoTS: Do you have a fan page? Twitter? Instagram?
Schock: I am all over the social media and Internet. Heres a list:
Damn that’s a lot. Nah, but I do a lot of different things artistically and sometimes they blend together. I use my nickname for both my artistic and musical endeavors, so that it’s easy to promote both.
Folks, be on the lookout for more of Justin. He is amazing, and we here at HoTS plan on keeping him around for many moons to come.

COMING SOON: TWD 100th Episode on Oct 22, 2017

COMING SOON: TWD 100th Episode on Oct 22, 2017

In seven days (“Seven days...”), The Walking Dead Season 8 will start out with their 100th episode.
It did take a long time for us to get here, us DeadHeads have to suffer a longer break than normal shows, then there's this mid-season break to go through. I mean SHIT.
In anticipation of the event, AMC released these videos:

Melissa McBride, Danai Gurira, and Lauren Cohan from the cast of The Walking Dead photographed exclusively for Entertainment Weekly by Art Streiber on June 24, 2017, in Senoia Georgia. / Styling: Elaine Montalvo / Prop Styling: John Sanders / Costumers: Mia Nunnally, Derrick Vener
Season 8 will also be the beginning of war between Rick and 'the good guys' and Negan and 'The Saviors'. Season 7 ended with Shiva, a tiger (YEAH, a TIGER!) jumping in and saving the day and ripping Saviors apart! I have waited so long to hear Negan's response to Shiva! I can't wait how he puts that in words. There was also that moment when we saw in Rick's eyes that he got his balls back, wasn't submissive at all and calmly told Negan he would kill him! OMG that quickly became my favorite scene of all time!!  I am so ready for the war to begin. The show was already suspenseful, not it will be pretty damn close to unbearable! So much to take in! So many emotions to go through, I personally am creating new cuss words to shout at the screen during the first episode of season 8!
Through the years, Entertainment Weekly has put out some incredible photos of the cast before the newest season. This coming season is my absolute favorite!

SPOOKY LOCATIONS: The Real Silent Hill

SPOOKY LOCATIONS: The Real Silent Hill

Silent Hill is based on a truly creepy town: Centralia, Pennsylvania, small town hidden in the smoke...from the fire that has been burning under the city for over 40 years.
SilentHill-Centralia_sidebyside / Fair use doctrine. The town was originally called Bull's Head by founder Alexander Rea, whom purchased the land from a Revolutionary War hero, and signer of the Declaration of Independence Robert Morris. The town's name was changed to Centreville. The town found out there was already a Centreville PA so they changed the name to Centralia. On Oct 17th 1868 Rea was murdered by an Irish gang called the Molly Maguires. In the 1890s the population of the town was 2,761. It was a bustling little town with five hotels, 27 saloons, seven churches, 14 general and grocery stores, one bank and one post office. It became such a nice little town because of the Anthracite Coal buried on the outskirts of town.
hauntedlocations-centralia-antiue-coalmine / Fair use doctrine. It was pretty common in the 60s (still a few now) for landfills to burn trash heaps. In Pennsylvania, after all, you don't have to worry about brushfires, right? In the spring of 1962, it began. The fire of a burning trash heap made it to the coal. Still it burns. Of course there were several attempts to put it out, lots of tries, lots of research, lots of time wasted.
Some left pretty quickly. After all noxious gas, and the ground erupting for steam pockets that would boil hauntedlocations-centralia-warningsign / Fair use doctrine.your flesh it not what many would desire in a nice place to raise a family. It took some of the towns people years before they would leave their beloved town. Many of the houses and buildings had retaining walls built around them to keep them standing, once their neighbor building was torn down. Then come 1983, August, the greater part of the town's residents decided to relocate the town. Finally the Federal Government has approved $42 million for them to do just that. The Centralia Mine Fire Acquisition Relocation Project has begun.hauntedlocations-centralia-roadcrackedup / Fair use doctrine.
The town has became an odd tourist destination and spook spot for many of us thrill seekers just for the look of the place alone! Artist of the Month – October 2017: Gabe Warfield

This month we are showcasing our youngest ever AotM. A whole 13 years old!! If you are around teenagers much, you quickly learn that the only thing they are interested in is rolling their eyes!! So Gabriel is a rare gem indeed!!
A brief bio of our special artist:
  • Name: Gabe Warfield

And here is our Q&A:
House of Tortured Souls: Your art is very unique. Were you inspired more by Toy Story or The Purge? ?

HoTS: How old were you when you started dabbling into your beautiful creations?
GW: All my life basically. I used to take my toys apart and add or subtract things even when I was very young.

HoTS: Who is your favorite monster, villain, or immortal creep?
GW: Jigsaw from the Saw movies is my favorite.
HoTS: Do you have an Etsy shop, or do you sell any pieces or do commissions?
GW: Not currently, but I am working on getting an Etsy shop online, and I’ve got plans for commission pieces where people can send me their broken toys so I can “fix” them.

HoTS: Are you working on a project right now?
GW: Yes. I’m working on several. Pictures will be uploaded on my Facebook artist page as soon as they are done. My mom and I just moved from North Carolina to Ohio last week, so I haven’t had a lot of time to work on them but hopefully they’ll be done soon!
HoTS: Do or did you go to art school or have any training in this?
GW: No, all of my art is self-driven.
HoTS: What do you like to do when you are not creating masterpieces?

COMING SOON: AMC’s The Walking Dead 100th Episode Contest

COMING SOON: AMC’s The Walking Dead 100th Episode Contest

The Walking Dead's 100th episode will begin season 8 on October 22, 2017! It's hard to believe that after 7 years, October 22nd will only be the one hundredth episode. But as long as it takes for a new season to come on, and the mid-season break does take up a lot of time. On Sunday, September 10th, during the return of Fear the Walking Dead, there will be an exclusive sneak peak into this special occasion. Take a look at this video that the folks at AMC put together of the best scenes of the last 99 episodes.
Season 8 of The Walking Dead will be the beginning of the war between Negan and The Saviors and our man Rick and everyone else! The season premieres are in generally pretty thrilling, and since this is the 100th episode, I imagine they have some very special treats for their fans.
Come join our The Walking Dead Facebook group. As always, we will be having a group chat during the episode. Since you are already going to be screaming at your TV, crying, and laughing, so why not join the fun with like-minded fellow DeadHeads.
Just yesterday AMC announced that they are holding a contest where the winner (one extremely lucky fan) will be flown to see the special and sit in for a 2-hour filming of The Talking Dead. The winner will even get a photo with the entire cast! Oh MAN! Just think of it. You would be up close and personal with the crew of The Walking Dead! :O (I think I truly would become one of the walking dead as I’m fairly certain I would die a million times over if I won!)
Here is the link to enter this amazing and generous contest. Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor!

COMING SOON: American Horror Story: Cult (5 September 2017)

COMING SOON: American Horror Story: Cult (5 September 2017)

A Look At American Horror Story: Cult

Okay, okay, okay – American Horror Story: Cult is coming! So, with this last trailer they have released, I have put together that a political figure (with shady past, looks like she murdered someone) has a fear of clowns, someone a tad upset over the murder is out for revenge and royal pisses in her fruit loops!
I had to blurt that our first. Many of my fellow AHS fans having been wondering if the clowns in the sneak peeks were a representation of the circus act going on in the White House. I say YEP, but they do pull off the clown plot in the story.
For example, this poster could easily be seen as all the red states and a lone blue in the mix. And I did pick up on the hints of a hive-like cult suggestion from that poster of the female clown with skull open and a bee hive where a brain should be and the beehive pattern of the background. In one of the trailers, a mass of bees fly out the mouth of the clown at center of circle.

And the symbol, sometimes it is unclear as to how many sides it has, could easily be the Pentagon (maybe Sarah works there), but it’s sometimes shown in the trailers more as symbol of beehive.
From the commercials, it seems more put together than “Roanoke”, and with much more Evan Peters (for that fact alone, you have my full attention ;-)), so already more people are interested in this season! I do not have Coulrophobia personally but tons do, so this season will certainly keep many peeking at the TV screen from under a blanket while holding tightly onto their teddy bear. An absolutely brilliant move by Ryan Murphy and Brad Fulchak! Fans did, after all, shout out their disappointment in “Roanoke”.
I, myself, was not a fan of the show until the trailer for season 5. Lady Gaga walking down a creepy hotel hallway as a Countess had me hooked! I'm not even a fan of Lady Gaga, but that scene was absolutely perfect, and I was dying to see if she pulled the role off as she appeared to be perfect for it. I soon after started a Facebook group for the show Fans of AHS. We have group chat during the airing of each show, and all mention of that episode is kept in the chat until two days after because our friends across the pond do not get to watch the same day as those of us in the US. I was thrilled for the most part, the ending of that season did disappoint me, and I was ‘meh’ for several scenes, but I did binge shortly after starting the group. I loved “Murder House” and “Coven” was pretty good as well. “Asylum” and “Freak Show”, however, could not capture my attention. I do love Twisty though. 🙂 I will speak more of him in an upcoming clown article I have planned for House of Tortured Souls. I quickly discovered I am in love with Evan Peters! I am aware that so are thousands of others, but I will warn you I am a big gal and stubborn AF.
For the most part, I love American Horror Story. We certainly needed a horror show, and we most definitely needed one that switched it up every season. I am LOVING the clowns in the trailers. They look phenomenal (and appear to be scary as hell – especially for those with a fear of clowns), and their cult dances set up the anticipation nicely, and I have my finger crossed that they pull it off smoothly and AHS: Cult be my new favorite season. 🙂
American Horror Story: Cult premieres on 5 September 2017, so get your snacks and security blanket ready – and happy viewing!

URBAN LEGENDS: Slender Man

URBAN LEGENDS: Slender Man

slinderman-playground / Fair use doctrine. No matter how many stories you have heard or photos you have seen, Slender Man is a fictional character. Mind you, he is a very popular monster, but he crept out of the mind of Eric Knudsen aka Victor Surge as recently as 2009. The black and white photos you have seen are edited. Very good Photoshopped pictures.
Slender Man is, of course, an amazing creature and a gripping, frightful man. I love the enthusiasm people have when they tell their Slender Man experiences! He was such a brilliant creation! He lurks; therefore. I love him!
As the name suggests, Slender Man is extremely tall and very slim. He has a blank face, wears a black suit, and sometimes even has tentacles coming out his back. Sometimes he is portrayed as having unusually long fingers that he can uncoil and use like tentacles. Slender Man kidnaps and traumatizes people - usually children. He appears in one of two ways. He may creep up, or he may suddenly appear in the distance. Slender Man, of course, is mute, seeing as to how he usually has no mouth. Neither does he have a nose or eyes for that matter. He has a completely blank face; nothing there but skin.
He is popular enough to have his own video games: Slender: The Eight Pages and Slender: The Arrival. Slender Man pops up in Minecraft as well.
There are some pretty good Slender Man sightings on YouTube, some not so good. Here is my favorite.

There are even some pretty creepy costumes of him! (I am an affiliate for halloweencostumes) Check out the Slender Man costumes here.
~~ Keep on creeping 😉

Artist of the Month – August 2017: RF Pangborn

Artist of the Month – August 2017: RF Pangborn

It's hard to believe this Mad Genius works retail by day. I cannot imagine him in any other uniform than an apron or lab coat!
Here is a brief bio: Born in Plainfield, NJ,now residing in Tampa Bay, FL, with his wife, dog and cat. 🙂 He paints in his home studio.
It took a long time for me to get an interview out of him, but I am stubborn like that. 😉 Here is our Q&A:
House of Tortured Souls: Did you go to art school or have any special training?
RF Pangborn: I've been a doodler my whole life. Drawing was a great form of escapism for me when I was a child. During my troubled adolescent years, one of my grade school teachers insisted my parents find an art school. I had the good fortune of living in the town next to impressionist painter Charles R. Nevad who taught privately. Huge mentor to me. After about five years of teaching me, he confides in me that my dad hasn’t paid him since the first two months. He didnt care. After his death, I swore to make art my life no matter the cost.
HoTS: Who is your favorite creep, beast, immortal bad guy?
RFP: Being raised on horror, I have so many favorites. It's hard to pick one or the other. My first obsession as a kid was with The Wolfman.
horror-aotm-rfpangborn-leatherfaceHoTS: Do you sketch your pieces out first in lead or go straight to painting?
RFP: I do a lot of requests, which is just basically copying what you see in a photo. But for my own personal pieces, I do like to fool around with ideas and sketches beforehand. I'm also partial to throwing abstract random brush marks on the board and waiting for the images to emerge. I think Jackson Pollack referred to this sort of thing as psychoanalytical painting, and I find it to be awesome therapy.
HoTS: Do you do any art shows or set up at conventions?
RFP: I’m currently featured at Hamilton Gallerie D'art in Illinois. I've done a few odd shows. Most everyone is on my case about the convention scene, and I want to get into it, but time just isn’t permitting at the moment.
HoTS: What or who inspired you to do horror art?
RFP: I think the horror angle was just a natural progression since I love it. There's a lot of drama and imaginative freedom.
HoTS: Do you have a fan page, Twitter, Instagram, or YouTube?
RFP: I have had a Facebook page up since I started painting again after a 25 year hiatus. I tried branching out to a .com, but it was a year of wasted effort. Social media is where it's at. Unfortunately, I only have enough time to really pay attention to one format right now. As you well know, it's all I can do to remember I have an interview waiting for months in my in box... 🙂
HoTS: Are you currently working on something?
RFP: I've been slowly trying to wean myself into full time art, so I'm working on multiple pieces around the clock. Always busy with something over here, thank God!
horror-aotm-rfpangborn-mummyHoTS: Do you do commission pieces?
RFP: Right now, it's the commissioned pieces that are keeping me afloat, so, yeah, I'm doing those constantly. I'm hoping that sometime soon this will open up more free time to work on some more original pieces, which is kind of why one gets into art in the first place. But request pieces help pay the bills around here so they get priority.
HoTS: I'm digging the cover piece to your album. 🙂 Where can we buy the album?
RFP: My album??? LOL, if you mean my ridiculous experimental noisecore, well here if you've got the stomach for it.
HoTS: What do you love to do when you are not creating horror?
RFP: I'd really love to get my hands back into filmmaking though it's time consuming to the extreme and pisses off everyone you know to no end. I can also see myself doing more "music" in the future, but right now I'm putting everything I have into the painting.

I dug this one up, hopes he appreciates my hard work. 😉

I will leave you folks with my favorite piece Vincent Flipping Price!!!!

TRIBUTE: GEORGE A. ROMERO (2 of ?)

TRIBUTE: GEORGE A. ROMERO (2 of ?)

RIP - The Godfather of Zombies
George A. Romero

georgeromero-zombielove / Fair use doctrine.George Romero meant so much to me personally. He created my love, my obsession with zombies. I cannot tell you my exact age when I first watched Night of the Living Dead, but it sparked the fire that is my love for horror and, more importantly, zombie stories. George A. Romero opened the door for many to follow, pushed the limits of horror further than anyone dreamed, awakened future directors and storytellers, and educated the world on the zombies (how they move, groan, react, and how people would react in a zombie apocalypse).
I'm not sure if Romero went for black and white to blend in with the classic horrors or because makeup and prosthetics aren't what they are today. All I know that it was a genius move! Night of the Living Dead was meant to be b&w. When I first turned on the movie (in my foolish youth) I wanted to immediately change the channel, after all b&w movies are just boring (back in the 80s when everything was neon). I'm not even sure now what kept me watching, but I am ever so thankful! George Romero was such a creative intelligent fellow in his time.
Romero was one of my first articles for HoTS when a little over a year ago Mr. Romero finally received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. It blew my mind that only just now was he receiving a star! After all his movies and work?!?!? Night of the Living Dead had several sequels (almost all 10 years apart), and he made several other type of horror movies, directed much of Creepshow, and participated in many documentaries, and specials. Romero is so loved by so many that The Walking Dead has had many tribute Easter eggs to Romero.
Fair use doctrine.
Romero even had a part in the zombie mode on Call of Duty: Black Ops.

George Romero left his mark and 'infected' so many of us. I, personally, will truly miss him.

Artist of the Month – July 2017: Aya Jade

Artist of the Month – July 2017: Aya Jade

I could not have picked a better AotM for July then Miss Aya. Because she is a firecracker!!! Special effects makeup has been popular for years now. Especially for cosplay and with shows like Face/Off. And this female artist certainly has skill in that department! I mean to go from this TO THIS will certainly blow a few minds and drop some jaws!!! I have some face paint left over that I WAS going to dabble with one of these days. But well SHIT!
Here is a brief bio of our lovely monster, followed by our Q&A:horror-artistofthemonth-ayajade-nun
My name is Aya, I'm a fashion and special effects artist from Wellington, New Zealand.
I'm 22 years of age and have been doing beauty makeup professionally since the age of 17 but I'm very new to the special effects community!
House of Tortured Souls: This extent of face special effects painting is pretty new and mind blowing! How many years have you been in it to get these awesome?
Aya Jade: I've only been doing it for a year now, but I dabbled in body painting before becoming qualified!
HoTS: Do you go to an Art School? Or have a special teacher?
AJ: I went to the Special Effects Makeup Course in Wellington last year, it is a 'Full-on' for a few months, learning the basics of what we need to know to be in this career path. I would love to go on to learn sculpting and molding.
HoTS: Why horror?
AJ: Horror movies and games are a favorite genre of mine and I've always been fascinated by the creations and transformations in them. Seeing something so grotesque in a real world is setting is intriguing but terrifying.
HoTS: What is your favorite monster?
AJ: Silent Hill creatures, they're all so insane looking.
HoTS: Is there a special makeup or body paint you use?
AJ: I use a lot of Kryolan, Ben Nye and Mehron! They're amazing professional SFX brands. I also Paint with Fab paint and Snazaroo.
HoTS: Do you do comic cons or any art shows?
AJ: Unfortunately we don't have much in New Zealand but I do go to our biggest event which is Armageddon. I'm either cosplaying or doing the zombie makeup!
HoTS: Do you do 'How to' videos?
AJ: Yes! I'm very amateur, though, haha.
HoTS: Do you have a fan page? Instagram? Twitter? Facebook? YouTube?
AJ: All of my social medias are under the name Aya Jade. I'm on Instagram, Facebook, and YouIube.
HoTS: Are you for hire? You would total rock a wedding!
AJ: Yes, I am actually!
HoTS: What do you like to do when you are not creeping people out?
AJ: I play video games, watch my favorite TV series and movies, I'm also super passionate about animals and love hanging out at my local shelters and sanctuaries if I'm not at home with my own!
I MEAN, WHO IS NOT IN LOVE WITH AYA NOW?!?!?

Matthew Zip: I have been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil or a crayon.
HoTS: Where did you learn to draw? Did you take classes?
MZ: Myself, mostly, until I got into high school and got into a good art class there with a very supportive teacher. After high school, I continued my education and got an associates degree in fine arts. That's where I really started to learn a lot, in college.
HoTS: When and why did you fall in love with horror art?
Matthew Zip: I've always been in love with the horror genre. Ever since I was a kid in the 80s, my dad would take me to video stores, and I would just stand there in the horror section and look at all the different covers. They were so beautiful and horrible at the same time, and they really captured my imagination.
HoTS: Do you draw in lead, charcoal, or the blood of innocent souls?
MZ: 😉 All of the above!

HoTS: Do you post in galleries anywhere or do a booth at comic cons or art shows?
MZ: I have done comic cons and art shows, no galleries as of now.
