Interview With Clarissa Jacobson

Hello everyone, this is the Horrormadam here with the second in my series celebrating the Gifted Heroines of Horror and Women In Film. I was honored to interview the brilliant Clarissa Jacobson on her new short film Lunch Ladies which she wrote and produced. To say I enjoyed this short would be a gross understatement, I loved it! So well written, so well acted, so well directed. The only thing I want out of it…is more! But before we get into that, a quick tease to wet your appetites!

Now that your interest is piqued, let me tell you the extraordinary premise in Clarissa’s own words.

Clarissa: For the past twenty years, obsessed Johnny Depp fans and fraternal twin sisters, Seretta and LouAnne Burr, have shared a miserable existence as high school lunch ladies serving up rubbery chicken parts, ammonia-treated government meat and whatever else the cash-strapped national lunch program sends their way. This year is going to be different: The twin’s Cheesy Burger Bites recipe is the Grand Prize Winner of Johnny Depp’s Cook for Kid’s Charity Event. Convinced this is their ticket out of high school hell town and that “The Depper” will hire them to be his very own Personal Chefs, their dreams are shattered after a snotty head cheerleader pushes them one step too far. This forces the Lunch Ladies to ask themselves – WWJD? What would Johnny do?

Bet you didn’t see that coming, did you? To all of those naysayers out there that say there are no new ideas, I say that you aren’t thinking outside the box. Clarissa’s clever story is outside the box, maybe even outside of leftfield and that is what makes it so surprising and refreshing.

Let’s see what else Clarissa had to say about Lunch Ladies and filmmaking:

Clarissa: When we first started out it was a bit disheartening, the first director said that no one would want to see this movie because no one wants to see two middle-aged female leads. Clarissa and I discussed this for a little while, especially how one of the nice things about the horror genre, is that horror does not discriminate. Young, old, beautiful, different looking, black, white, gay straight-in horror films we embrace them all.

Clarissa went on to discuss people thoughts on her influences:

Clarissa: I have heard John Waters (Serial Mom, Cecil B. Demented, Hairspray), John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Home Alone), and Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride) and I grew up on them and I love them. They’re saying that and its funny how it just seeps in and it is the biggest compliment.
Clarissa: This was my first time producing a movie and I had so much luck drawing the right people to me. The first set designer we had dropped out like one week before shooting and I was like don’t worry about it, just go with the flow. Then brought in this husband and wife couple, Ray and Alicia Ho that were one hundred times better. What happened is I just totally stepped out of the way and the most amazing people helped me and worked on it. They were all at the top of their game and everybody brought what they brought, everyone did their job and when we finished it was everything that I wanted. Exactly what I imagined in my head, even better.

I said to her how amazing that was that she was able to get what she wrote, everything that was in her head to fruition.

Clarissa: It really was magical. My writing mentor, he was a tap dancer on Broadway when he was younger. He came on as a producer also and he did the dancing scene in the cafeteria. What I had written was rhythmic and he said he had this crazy idea, how about we do a mash-up? We will have ballet dancers, hip-hop dancers, and tap dancers and I was like Joe, I have no idea what is inside your head but you are the most talented person I know so do what you want.

I was also honored to speak to Joe, who turns out to be Joe Bratcher who has been acting since 1976 in some really great shows like All In The Family, Laverne & Shirley, and The Rockford Files, and in films like The Howling and Coma. He also runs The Twin Bridges Screenwriting Salon, the longest running screenwriting classes in Los Angeles. He told me how hard Clarissa had been working and how much he loved working with her and what a great person she is. He also backed up the story Clarissa had just told me by saying that she really went to bat for him with the director. She really wanted him to create his vision for the cafeteria scene because she knew it would work.

Clarissa: The director was awesome, but that’s how everybody was, they all brought really creative shit to it. The director J.M. Logan is an award-winning filmmaker and who has filled nearly every position in the business over twenty-five years. Out of hundreds, credits include Kidnap, Manson Family Vacation, The Circle, The End Of The Tour, Stoker & Annabelle. He said his goal is to be as close to the script as possible. At one point he was like there is this scene at the beginning, it was gonna be expensive to do and I was concerned what might happen, it might not work. I was like you know we can just cut that and we can just do the scene in front of the school than we don’t need to get a car. And Josh was like NO! That is whats written in the script and that’s what we’re gonna do. And the car scene I mean the car scene is so great for starting out the movie, he was so adamant, he and everybody came up with great ideas, like the whole concept with the Russian posters, so inventive I just loved it.
Clarissa: I also had a hard time finding a location. I called like a hundred schools. This one place is like we read the script and we’ll never let you film your movie here! They acted like I had written a porn! But I wanted a John Hughes type of school kind of upper-class. Josh the director had a friend that was like call these two Catholic schools and I was freaking out because I couldn’t find a location. So I called these two schools and they both said I could film there. The only thing was that they had really big kitchens and we needed it to look run down so we just filled it with all this stuff. And then Josh had the idea to use these eastern block like posters which along with the lunch trays were the only real punches of color. We filmed over two weekends, four days with twenty thousand dollars. It was really great and everyone was really fun but the last day was the hardest, we didn’t get out of there till four a.m. We had one hundred and thirty people working on it and everyone is coming back to do the feature which is already written.

I asked her then, it is winning so many awards you would think someone would just jump on it? Atlanta Horror Film Festival 2017 (winner: Best writer/producer and Best Director), Nightmares Film Festival 2017 (best writer/producer, director), and the South African Horrorfest 2017 (Best writer/producer and director).

Clarissa: Well its still new so a lot could happen in the next couple of months. We started our run in August which went great and we had nothing in September, but we had a lot in October because it is Halloween. So we have only been on the film festival route for about four months and it goes on for a year and a half. The majority of competitions and stuff aren’t until next year. So we are just working our asses off to get it noticed. And I definitely want to give a shout out to the horror community. I LOVE the horror community, they are my kind of people! I didn’t start out writing horror, I thought it was a comedy. When I saw it on the screen I couldn’t believe that came out of my head! All I could think was, where did that come from and what was wrong with me? I have always been a closet horror fan, I love The Exorcist, Let The Right One In and The Shining. One time I was writing a Gothic horror story and as I went dark, I realized the dark side is the most creative place to be. In it, you can do anything.


I want to thank Clarissa Jacobson again for taking the time to talk to me at the
House of Tortured Souls and also thank her for writing such a unique horror/comedy short. I cannot recommend it to you highly enough readers. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but I know that you will not be disappointed when you see it. All I am waiting for now is the full-length feature to be made so I can enjoy the further escapades of the Lunch Ladies! And from now on I may even find myself asking as I go through life…WWJD?

And, like I said before, I don’t want to give any spoilers but some fun trivia: Lunch Ladies used 10 gallons of blood, 10 gallons of slime/goo, 15 gallons of “food,” 40 pounds of potatoes (200 pounds brought to set) and 13 pounds of ground meat. And Clarissa told me the meat had been left out and smelled like hell and they had to have the school back together for when the kids came in on Monday and she had to Febreeze everything to death (pun intended).

We have a great one on one interview sit down with writer/director Joe Stauffer. Joe, as you know or should, brought us the 2014 smash Indie horror film Pieces of Talent.
On a personal note, not only is this at the top of my Indie list, this film is at the top of my all time favorites list! I absolutely love this film as I feel it is a true work of art brought to life on the silver screen, all the more reason I was so excited and enjoyed getting to become friends with Joe Stauffer. And it was a great honor to have him on the House of Tortured Souls Live Podcast!
Joe sits and discusses the making of Pieces of Talent, Indie films, and a few possible things brewing for the future of Joe Stauffer and Shutter Blade Media.

MOVIE REVIEW: The Barn (2015)

The Barn, a 2015 Indie horror film written and directed by Justin Seaman and brought to you by the good people of Nevermore Film Productions, will definitely bring a nostalgic smile to your face!
The Barn tells the tale of three supernatural entities that are brought back to life by trick-or-treaters who knock on the doors of a small town barn that has a haunted past. The Barn opens on a town gathering where the local clergyman is kicking off the local annual Halloween hootenanny in 1959. A young boy and girl swap glances during the introduction and quickly take off for the taboo barn after the Hootenanny opening speech. They stand back from the barn door, daring each other to trick-or-treat. At last, paying no mind to the warnings of the clergyman, the young girl takes off her Halloween mask and knocks on the barn door, yelling, “Trick or treat!” only to swiftly meet her demise.
And so the story begins...30 years later.
We are quickly introduced to a group of high school seniors who loves Halloween, lead by Sam, in the group who lives and breathes for Halloween, as Halloween 1989 approaches. Sam truly believes in all of its glory, spirits, and the tradition of trick-or-treating. After reluctantly deciding this would be their final Halloween, the group elects to make their mark in an elaborate plan to collect record amounts of candy, trick all who offer no treats, and finish the night at the perfect Halloween concert. Ultimately they decide to test the local Halloween legend of the ritual that summons the spirits of Halloween. Will the Halloween spirits will be raised or will the group make the concert?
The Barn is a fun movie – a lot of fun! I've got to admit that I really didn't know what to expect at first. I love – actually, I absolutely adore – Halloween-based films so much so that I can be very hard to please with them. It’s a heavy cross that I bear to love something so much and yet be so judgmental. Pretty much from the get-go, however, I was sucked in with The Barn. It deals a lot with Halloween folklore and tradition, both of which utterly fascinate me, and the film immediately put me in the Halloween spirit. And that’s the true test of a Halloween-based film.
The movie itself is set in 1989, from the attire to the lingo used in the film. Hell, even down to the score/music for The Barn, offered up by musician, director (10/31/16) and co-producer of The Barn, Rocky Gray. Even the gratuitous topless girl during a make-out scene (the breasts got their own credit) to the special effects, blood, and gore used during the film is like taking a giant step back in time...but in a very good way! And, I must say, that adding two small roles in the film, played by Ari Lehman and Linnea Quigley, was a great enhancement to the 80s feel and a great touch overall to the film itself.
I must give props to director Justin Seaman for not only having directed The Barn but also having starred as the lead evil Halloween spirit. Justin puts you so in touch with his vision for the film, that you'll be humming the music to Miami Vice while looking for your parachute pants and “Frankie says Relax” t-shirt after the movie. I’ve seen a lot of retro films (mostly bad because they just cant seem to pull it off), and The Barn is one that succeeds on any level!
If you're looking for something that's fun, a good time, not too dark, and not too serious, but still a serious horror film, I highly suggest that you check out The Barn. Go ahead and do yourself a favor. Step on over to The Barn official website and pick up your own DVD ‘cause it is definitely worth it!

Red Letter Entertainment, Inc. brings you the directorial debut from Rocky Gray (composer of The Barn, Killing Floor 2),two time Grammy winning musician and former drummer for Evanescence.

A new horror anthology in the vein of V/H/S/ and Creepshow
brings an ensemble cast together to spin twisted tales of the macabre. The film is Executive Produced by P.J. Starks, creator of the critically acclaimed Volumes of Blood franchise.


Story line:
A video tape given to a group of teens by a sinister trick or treater turns Halloween night into a living nightmare.

The film stars Jordan Phipps, Greg Fallon, Samantha Anderson, Taylor Aulbach, Darius White, Micah Patterson, Kirby Gocke, Star McCann, and Alivea Lafavor.

So when can we expect too see the finished project? Good question! 10/31/16 is set to be released around August 2017.

When Rocky and I first met, i knew he was the drummer for Evanescence, I also knew he was a huge horror fan, it was because that, that i pursued Rocky to join the staff of House of Tortured Souls. And what an addition he has been, graphics for the website, logo images, and last but by no means least - the opening and closing music for our podcast House of Tortured Souls Live. All of which we have had many compliments over, and we thank you, Rocky!!

I was in awe of the work Rocky had been doing with scores and soundtracks, but when he first mentioned to me about him making his own film, the upcoming 10/31/16, I’m pretty sure my reply text to him was, “FUUUCK YEA!!!!! Keep me posted. I’d be honored to support and help you out any way I can!”

When Rocky told me he had sent me the trailer and press release for 10/31/16, I was thrilled and couldn't wait to get home and check it out ! As most of you know, I am a huge fan of horror anthologies, so when Rocky mentioned that's what his film was, I was super stoked!

MOVIE REVIEW: (S)AINT NICK (2016)

(S)AINT NICK, written and directed by Jonathan Patrick Hughes, newcomer Hughes brings you his own dark vision of holiday cheer. Yes, Halloween (sadly) enough is over. It's time to take down all the fake spider webs and pack up the Styrofoam tombstones till next October. Christmas season, like it or not, is now upon us, and Hughes's vision of welcoming it, well, it's one that has to be seen.

The story focuses on Ashley and her younger brother Billy, siblings who now live with their stepfather Horace after an untimely car accident took their mother's life, and Matthew's wish to Santa on Christmas Eve. This is (S)AINT NICK, though, so his wish isn't for a new Xbox or a new iPhone but something much more personal. Little Billy wants Horace's head under the Christmas tree.Horace, the stepfather, is a drunken, dirty, disgusting, pig of a man who mentally, emotionally and possibly, though it's never actually mentioned, physically abuses his stepchildren. But I have got to give credit where credit due. The actor playing Horace, John Seese tops any actors portrayed I've seen in many years when it comes to portraying his role. When I watched his acting I honestly compared it to David Hess's character Krug Stillo from The Last House on the Left, a performance which was near stomach-turning on the screen. He's definitely the guy you love to hate. Dirty, scummy and perverted all makes for a jolly good time.

Upon first watching (S)AINT NICK, I noticed the quality of the film and was pleasantly surprised. It was evident even from the opening credits that this wasn't a normal, run-of-the mill handheld camera filmed in someone's basement with bad, echoing sound and credits that somebody threw together with a cheap program from their computer. What Hughes does bring you is a full-fledged film, great quality in both audio and video. The sound is crystal clear - not muffled and no echo. The acting is surprisingly good, and even the special effect makeup were pretty much on point. Hell, even the score (music) in (S)AINT NICK was good.BASIC TEXT BLOCK

Did I mention that Hughes crammed all of this and more into a 28 minute movie that doesn't leave you feeling like it was rushed? (S)AINT NICK is a short film that is going to be included in a Christmas horror anthology called 12 SLAYS OF CHRISTMAS which is being produced by Tony Newton and will be a VOD and DVD release.

If this is a sample of what the Christmas season has to bring us, well, being a horror fan, all I can say is bring it! Jonathan Patrick Hughes, you did well, sir. I would easily rank (S)AINT NICK as a classic in the Christmas horror subgenre!

What Hughes gives you is far from a newcomer's final product. Be proud, Mr. Hughes, (S)AINT NICK is a winner.

MOVIE REVIEW: Circus of the Dead (2014)

In 2014, almost three years ago, native Texan, and downright great guy, Billy Pon, aka Bloody Bill, and long time friend Lee Ankrum, brought the world, Circus of the Dead. Once upon a time in the world, when you thought of clowns, you thought of children laughing, balloon animals, bright colorful makeup, and a red spongy nose. Well, Bill and Lee are taking you to another kind of circus.

We had the great pleasure of having Bloody Bill as a guest on our podcast show, House of Tortured Souls Live a few weeks ago. He and I spoke recently, and Bill sent me a screener for Circus of the Dead to review for him. I WAS THRILLED!

Circus of the Dead, starring Bill Oberst, Jr. (Criminal Minds, The Retrieval), plays Papa Corn, the leader of our violently, criminally insane clowns that are members of an actively traveling circus.

The story focus's around Donald Johnson played by Parrish Randal (Gut Instincts,Possum Walk) as he is taken hostage by the clowns after a home invasion where his wife (Chanel Ryan, Bad Kid Go To Hell) is brutally murdered and his two daughters are kid napped by the clowns that the family just enjoyed at the local circus, just the day before. Papa Corn and his crew torture and make Donald take witness to future violent crimes all while still in hopes of being freed and finding his daughters.


The film is very dark, twisted and depraved...all of which I like. Bill Oberst, Jr. as Papa Corn, was spot on. My god, I think the man was made for this role! He lures you in and makes you watch, like driving past a bad car accident, you have to look. His performance, even as a clown throughout the entire film, is very commanding. Clown makeup or not, you will take Papa Corn serious.

I have been fortunate to have met a rather large handful of actors, directors, and writers of the horror genre in the last few years. I have also become a supporter of the Indie scene. Billy Pon and Lee Ankrum are proud members of that community, and they should be very proud of Circus of the Dead. The film runs just over 140 minutes, and I loved every second of it.


After waiting and waiting, they have finally come to a trust worthy distribution for Circus of the Dead, and will be released VOD in the very near future. If you were wondering why it was made two years ago and is just now getting out there, that's why. And for that, I tip my hat to you gentlemen for holding true to your work.

Circus of the Dead, in my opinion, will become a cult classic that will live on for years. This is going to be one for me to add to my library for sure, ...shit man, just look at the movie poster, its badass. So do yourself a favor, when the opportunity arrives, go fucking watch Circus of the Dead! You wont regret it.

Oh yeah, and while you're waiting for the VOD release, fill up the family-truckster and head down to Texas by Halloween night for ole Bloody Bill's Haunt. Yup, Pon himself is a hauntrepreneur, with his very own haunt in Odessa, Texas. Or at least check him out at WWW.BLOODYBILL.COM.

COMING SOON: RAPT 2016 (Indie short)

If there's one film you need to keep an eye out for, it's Rapt. More and more lately, the independent movie scene is on the move and growing larger everyday. There's so much hidden talent out there and, unfortunately, there're still a lot of movie and horror film fans that are leery about putting down their hard-earned cash for a DVD that doesn't have a major movie label on the DVD box, a huge name in the cast, or a great soundtrack.

Well, I'm here to introduce to you a short film that I think you will all enjoy. The film is called Rapt and is brought to you and filmed on location and by some great people in New Jersey. The story is that of a disgruntled, down on his luck, independent horror film director (Russell Hackett) giving his debut film a viewing at a small but extremely cool local film house where they do film testing. Sadly, the audience’s response to the director's film is less than comforting as not only do people criticize it, but many even walk out. This throws the filmmaker into a downward spiral, his depression now fueling his rage at rejection. One by one he hunts the movie goers who were less than kind to his film with an eye to make all of them the leads in his next horror film. No makeup or SFX are needed for the cast as he brutally slays all of them on camera.

When Rapt co-writer and star of the film Russell Hackett asked me a few weeks ago if I would consider viewing and giving my thoughts on the film, I responded that I'd be honored to do so. I’m very glad that I did as one highlight of the film for me was getting to see faces of online friends that I have not yet personally met, such as Deana Demko, Todd Staruch, and Russell Hackett, who gave a very impressive performance as Filmmaker.

12310536_10208014129297030_1832838868256629080_nThe film was co-written by Russell Hackett and Jerry Janda (Painkiller) and directed by Thomas Ryan (writer and executive producer Day 9). Keep an eye on Ryan because he is on the move and has an eye for the camera that really makes you feel his vision.

The film itself runs just under 40 minutes, but don't mistake a short run time for lack of quality. Rapt is a good, solid film that possesses everything you would want and expect from a quality film. It has realistic dialogue and believable acting, which are complemented by clever use of lighting and excellent sound. And, might I add, it has a great score to boot!

Rapt is a refreshing and original film brought to you by DocHack Productions and Theater of Terror (that director Thomas Ryan founded). Dane Granger is a 25 year old lesbian who left her small Indiana hometown after graduating high school to escape the tragedy of her adolescence, and the demons it brought with it. Unfortunately, Dane is still plagued by those demons, which manifest themselves as a silent, faceless man that silently watches over her, tormenting her. Dane is also haunted by an unhealthy desire to be with the love of her life, the all american hometown sweetheart, Grace Harper. 

After escaping her small hometown life, Dane becomes a well known actress but in spite of her fame, fortune and glory, she struggles with the memories of her past and the events that shattered her family when she was just a young girl. Dane's life was forever changed in an instant when her father not only commited suicide, but took her little brother with him. She has never been the same. 

A few years later, Dane is forced to return home to attend a the funeral of a very close friend who was not only Dane's roommate, but Grace's sister, Matty.  Dane of course runs into Grace and and is forced to face her past, and the faceless man who torments her, head on. Soon, Dane is spiraling out of control when she finds out Grace is soon to be married. Grace is, was, and always will be Dane's Kryptonite, her one and only weakness. Before long, Dane's descent into madness begins as she struggles to figure out who, and what, she really is. 

Dane has many demons. So does Grace. And their demons do not play well with each other. Dane and Grace truly are a match made in hell. Grace could very be the end of Dane, as her desire slowly drives her into a careless existence.

Dane Granger is a heartbreaking tale of madness, turmoil, and heartbreak. 

"Madness is the symptom, love is the disease"...

Shortly after reading Stephanie Hensley's book Dane Granger Reborn (which I absolutely loved) it was announced that a movie was in the works. I have been eagerly awaiting the films release since then. It's no secret that I have been a champion of this project, and as luck would have it, I was asked by Stephanie herself to give the first review of the finished product, which is truly an honor. 

In most cases where I have read the book first, I am usually not particularly fond of the screen adaptations but with Dane Granger, the screenplay was written by Stephanie herself and as such, not much gets lost in translation. I was seriously blown away and FAR from disappointed with the finished product. And just like the book, I was in tears by the films end. That doesn't happen often. 

While not an out and out horror film, Dane Granger definitely has it's horrific moments and the things that float around in Dane's head are truly frightening. Watching her wrestle her demons and fight to find some peace within herself is hard to watch at times. You want to hug and comfort her while simultaneously beating the shit out of her. Dane is a beautiful, tragic mess and that in itself is horrific.

The direction of Hensley and Jolliffe was nothing short of amazing and some of the shots are simply gorgeous. This film does not look like it's the first for either one of them. Their passion for it is clearly evident and they make a fabulous team. Their work is seriously impressive and I will definitely be looking forward to seeing more from both of them in the future. The only real issue with the film are some issues with the sound, but other than that, this film is truly a work of art. 

Frankie McKay's performance as the titular character is nothing short of mind blowing. Frankie IS Dane, without question. And this comes from someone who was extremely skeptical about the casting choice. within the first five minutes I knew my initial thoughts were way off the mark. In all honesty, I don't think a  better casting choice could have been made. 

The Dane Granger indiegogo campaign recently ended and hopefully that's a sign that the film will be unleashed upon the masses very soon. I seriously cannot recommend it enough.

If you like indie cinema, drama and psychological thrills, this is definitely one you need to check out. I am already looking forward to getting my physical copy upon the films release and watching the beautiful craziness that is Dane Granger all over again.
