Upcoming Games: Agony, We Happy Few, and Overkill’s The Walking Dead

This week I am continuing the series on upcoming and recently released horror games of 2018. In this piece, I take a brief look at Agony, We Happy Few, and Overkill’s The Walking Dead. All widely anticipated by fans of survival horror, I can honestly say that each of them has my attention, but for different reasons. Those three games are different from each other in every way.

Agony is a first-person survival horror game, where one plays as a soul being tormented in hell. This premise in itself intrigues the hell out of me, pun unintended. Wandering the landscapes of hell, you have no memories and are trying to figure out who you are and if there is a way to get out of your current predicament. Not a lot has been released concerning this game so far, but what I have seen has already sucked me in, making me want to see more. Just the images and the small amount of gameplay that has been shown showcases some beautiful graphics that have immediately caught my eye. I’ll certainly be watching for more information on this one in the days to come! It will be released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One later this year.

We Happy Few is based in a dystopian 1964 England with the premise that everyone is regulated by way of drugs. Self-expression and thought are essentially outlawed and there are police everywhere who work to make sure that you are properly moderated. Think a cross between Huxley’s Brave New World and Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale where everything is policed and monitored so that everyone fits into a particular cookie cutter shape. A first person experience, you play as an individual (what would appear to be the primary crime in this society) who refuses to take the medication that you are required to take and must survive in a society where the individual is not meant to exist. It will be coming out on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One some point this year.

The third game in this piece sticks out in that it is an attempt at putting the player in the universe of The Walking Dead. Tragically, attempts have been made in the past and besides Tell-Tale Games, everything has been total shit. While not much has been revealed about this game, Overkill, the studio behind it has made some good games in the past so we have some hope there. Similar to their other releases, The Walking Dead will be a cooperative-based first-person shooter. Of course, this means you get to work together with your friends to survive a zombie apocalypse. The other part we know is that it will be set in Washington, D.C. so that should also give it a fun edge as well. It is set to come out Fall of 2018 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Naturally, as more is revealed about these upcoming releases, I will be keeping everyone informed, and with a bit of luck, I’ll get my hands on all of them to give you my thoughts as they are released.
