This Just In – Hellraiser: Judgement News

Not Your Father's Hellraiser?

By Woofer McWooferson

Hellraiser fans have been waiting anxiously and with trepidation for news of the latest installment in the franchise – Hellraiser: Judgement*. We've learned Paul Taylor (Sin City) will be playing the new incarnation of the beloved and feared Pinhead and that Heather Langenkamp (A Nightmare on Elm Street) as been added to the cast. However, the revelation (no pun intended) that Doug Bradley would not be returning was the biggest area of dissent among the fans who still remember the last faux Pinhead from Hellraiser: Revelations and, therefore, fear the worst. Indeed, first looks at what was alleged to be the new Pinhead were deeply disappointing. Now, however, new images have surfaced of a Pinhead we might be able to love almost as much as the esteemed Mr. Bradley's (though I reserve judgment (See what I did there?) until I can see the movie).

From Bloody Disgusting's interview with special effects artist and Hellraiser: Judgement director Gary Tunnicliffe, we have learned a lot about what to expect in the Hellraiser: Judgement. For one, Judgement was conceived as a Hellraiser project even though Tunnicliffe once stripped all Hellraiser elements in an attempt to get it funded as an independent film. Though he met with several producers, none were willing to take a chance on it. In Tunnicliffe's words: “...(t)hey always balked…and usually asked if I would instead be interested in directing a movie about some teens being chased by a masked killer (yawn).” Failing to get backing that way, he next tried Kickstarter but quickly shut it down when he discovered it was “basically ‘begging’ for money”. Tunnicliffe returned to his original idea to make the film part of the franchise.

But how does Hellraiser: Judgement fit into Clive Barker's already intricate and richly detailed universe? Tunnicliffe assures us that the script was always a Hellraiser movie and brings to play a new “mechanism in conjunction with the box for the gathering of souls”. This is where the new characters come in – and not all of them are Cenobites. All that Tunnicliffe will reveal about the new characters is that there are several factions in Hell and the Cenobites are the “sharp end of the stick” as he put it.

While Pinhead is synonymous with Hellraiser, another major question fans have is why create a new Pinhead when Doug Bradley's Pinhead is archetypal? Some claim that a new Hellraiser without Bradley shouldn't even have a Pinhead, but Tunnicliffe disagrees, comparing Pinhead to the special sauce on a burger (pardon the analogy - it's Tunnicliffe's): too much and you get sick, too little and you're left wanting. This Pinhead, Tunnicliffe asserts, will be tougher and edgier than fans are used to, and he will not have the silver tongue that elevated Bradley's Pinhead from supporting character to the must have start. With deeper cuts, longer pins, solid black eyes, and a sleeker wardrobe, this Pinhead will be icy cool where Bradley's was as hot as the Hell from which he came.

Hellraiser: Judgement focuses on the efforts of Detectives Sean and David Carter as they try to track down a sadistic serial killer, eventually joining forces with Detective Christine Egerton and digging deep into a spiraling maze of horror that may not be earthly. Tunnicliffe explains that the story will focus on the serial kiler aspect rather than the Hellraiser elements, which seems to cast doubt on his allegation that the film has always been conceived as a Hellraiser entry. Only time will tell.

*NOTE: The different spellings are not errors. Director Tunnicliffe is English, thus the British spelling of Judgement in the title. As an American, I have reverted to the Americanized spelling when not referencing the title per se.
