Deditorial #2: Why Has The Story Of WOLF CREEK Actor John Jarratt Being Found Not Guilty Of Rape Not Been Told?

Every facet of life has been touched upon by the #Metoo movement and sexual violence and the horror genre is certainly no exception to the rule. Two of the biggest names in our genre include the disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein (THE BURNING, HARDWARE, DUST DEVIL, SCREAM, NIGHTWATCH, MIMIC and more) and actress Asia Argento (DEMONS 2, THE CHURCH, TRAUMA, THE STENDHAL SYNDROME, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, LAND OF THE DEAD and more) but also includes names like Victor Salva (JEEPER CREEPERS 1, 2 and 3), Roman Polanski (REPULSION, THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS, ROSEMARY’S BABY), Bryan Singer (APT PUPIL, TRICK ‘R’ TREAT) and Brian Peck (THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 1, 2 and 3, CHILDREN OF THE CORN III: URBAN HARVEST) and it seems over time there will be more names (both men AND women) who will be brought to light. While I firmly believe that those that commit these heinous crimes should be brought to justice and their cases brought before a proper court setting, we do need to be careful that people are not simply judged in the court of public opinion and their lives be ruined before FACTUAL proof is established. That brings us to John Jarratt…

For those that may not be aware, John is an Australian actor who starred in the cult WOLF CREEK movies and TV series as well as other genre fare such as ROGUE, SHIVER, 100 BLOODY ACRES, FRENZY and BOAR. On August 25th, 2018 he was charged with allegedly sexually assaulting a woman more than 40 years ago in September 1976. The complainant has testified she was woken about 3am one night when Jarratt ripped off her covers and underwear, unzipped his fly, pinned her down, covered her mouth with his hand and raped her. She didn’t go to police until November 2017.*1 The details of the case are quite extensive and can be best explained in this video that took place on 60 Minutes Australia:

I certainly believe that John had very poor judgement in engaging in sexual activity with another woman while married, but the facts of this showed that’s all it was: a mistake. What really bothers me is that when you look this case up, there are tons of articles that are quick to hold him to the fire as a rapist, yet once he was found not guilty, there was nowhere near the amount of articles stating that. It is also troublesome that there is almost no attention given to the fact that John himself was the victim of sexual assault when he was younger. It will not be remembered that he was not guilty but everyone will remember that he was labeled a rapist. The damage that is forever done to his reputation will never go away and will be something that haunts him for the rest of his life.  I am glad to see he is now suing The Daily Telegraph and journalist Jonathon Moran for defamation.*2  What truly saddens me is how I can find no one else in our genre profession that has reported on this case other than those that noted he was charged with rape. I have not found a single article on any other horror site mentioning the fact that he was found not guilty and I think that is a stain on all of us as journalists. If it is important to report every case of sexual assault, why is it not as important to let the world know that an accused actor in our genre has been found not guilty? Shame on all of us for jumping on the social justice bandwagon when it suits our needs for clickbait headlines but not reporting when a man is exonerated of those same charges…
