DIS [Movie Review] a living painting of pain and suffering.

To understand DIS (2017) you must watch the movie. What Adrian Corona has done is simply show us what we think we know vs a completely different mind fuck which this movie successfully pulls off from the infamous opening sequence of a woman tied up naked being sexually assaulted to where she squirts into a tin bowl no cut away, no edits, no CGI This happens in real time with no dialogue just screaming it opens to the wonderful song (Fantastical Symphony: An episode in the life of an artist in five parts, op 14: V.) I instantly fell in love with this art house horror film. My jaw was to the floor not since Clockwork Orange (1971) has a movie that captures both emotion and sexual deviance with such a raw aggression with little to no dialogue. The film is about an ex-soldier with a criminal past takes refuge in the woods. A demonic figure seeks the seed of killers and the blood of the damned to feed his mandrake garden. DIS is an infernal descent into the root of the mandrake legend and a man who wanders too close to that legend and the unnameable terror behind it. What you sow you will reap. Bill Obertst Jr does an AMAZING job in this film where he himself has very few lines but delivers an amazing performance where as I was conflicted on him, should I hate him? Should I care for him? Should I feel anything? The movie itself shows later on he’s not exactly the best person in the world, but yet I can’t help but feel sorry for him where through most of the film he’s isolated from the world seeking refuge in the woods and sadly the first person he comes in contact with is his escort into hell, but the picture that Adrian paints of hell isn’t exactly what those have seen or even can imagine it’s quiet, it’s cold, it’s forgotten almost as if he was getting what he deserved in life with Karma if you will. To see Dis is to feel it, to experience it. As if it was a vivid dream of seeing Bill’s past to even watching him trying to escape his prison only to be stopped dead in his tracks. The ending is that of pure nightmare fuel, no dialogue, no sympathy we finally see the Hooded person’s face and cannot feel not fear but acceptance just like Bill’s character feels since there is ‪no escape, no reasoning. My overall experience with the film is that it is hard to put in words what I saw, but it is an experience where multiple viewings will happen. Not to say to there’s details I may have missed, but just to take more of it as if this was a living painting. Adrian Corona delivered a movie with an insane opening and ending sequence to filling in the middle with an interesting story. The film is out to rent and buy right now on Vudu and Amazon. Buy the movie and get ready for a ride.

Dear Jai,

Thank you for such a literate and thoughtful review of a strange film. I was struck by your saying “the picture that Adrian paints of hell is…quiet, cold forgotten, almost as if he was getting what he deserved in life with Karma” I felt the same sensation when I read Adrian Corona’s script for DIS, and that’s what made me want to do the movie. I think a cold and forgotten hell is much more frightening than a fiery, flashy one. I greatly enjoyed reading your thoughts.
