[Editorial] Is James Wan planting seeds or hinting towards a dark DC universe?

When James Wan came into the horror scene with Saw, it was different and exciting with a considerable twist we didn’t see. Leaving going what the fuck is going on? The movies went on to spawn sequels. He then went on to do action movies which fans embraced as well, including his time with the Fast and the Furious, Which is a fun movie. Showing he can do an action movie he went on to do Aquaman which was a box office smash.

James may have done action movies, but he never went away from horror.  Spawning sequels of Annabelle, The Nun to even The La Llorona connected to it all. After watching the last film, Annabelle comes home; I saw something that caught my eye. In a scene where two of the main actresses are talking at a grocery store preparing for a weekend of babysitting.

By the quick glimpse, you see something in the background of a comic shelf. Three comics. Not a big deal, or is it? Let’s breakdown how this could be a big deal. James is known for throwing us little hints and “seeds” (and a few Annabelle easter eggs in the dc superhero movies) which may not be a big deal now but later such as the Saw films and even Conjuring give us spin-offs. With the downfall of the some DC superhero movies. Times have been rough what with Marvel being number one, but with the firing of James Gunn on Guardians 3.  Suicide Squad did have a GOTG feel to it.

Gunn has stated he’s hoping to rebuild the DC movie universe which is cool and all plus with talks with JJ Abrams working with Warner Bros it would make sense for them to say, Any ideas on how to improve the DC movies? With these powerhouses behind their films, they can do wonders, but the thing is James Wan behind a dark DC universe is just what they need also.

As stated, you see comics in the background: Phantom Stranger, The Demon and Swamp Thing. James has given us substantial blockbuster horror films on small budgets plus taking chances and having tremendous success is also part of his resume. A dark dc universe is just what we need whereas Marvel has experimented with rated r action films. Who better to do a horror action than James. James Wan has a way of planting seeds and gearing towards bigger things from his films.

Plus don’t forget James is working on the movie about the DC sea creatures The Trench so if that does well there’s hope? Maybe it’s just random luck we saw those specific comics, but keep in mind these comics deal with paranormal, demons and gore. James Wan knows this market. James would bring to light old characters into a way that can be marketable and a franchise. Of course, it may not happen, but one can dream.
