Horror-On-Sea Film Festival 2020: The Psychics 2019

The Psychics is a 2019 Norwegian horror thriller written and directed by Tomas Sem Løkke-Sørensen. It stars Kirsti Lovas, Frank Thomas Holen Andersen, Oddrun Valestrand, Hannah Karine Giske, and Jennie Sofie Lie Pickl. A woman making a documentary about psychics, searches for answers surrounding the disappearance of her sister. The acting in this was phenomenal, especially since all of the dialogue was unscripted improv. There’s a real, genuine quality and feel to it. It’s a found footage documentary style film, and only the third Norwegian found footage film ever made. Everything you see on screen is fresh and extremely engaging as it rolls on. You feel like you’re right there in it with the characters, experiencing what they are. There really wasn’t much going on in the film, aside from the paranormal aspect. It’s pretty slow going, yet does a fantastic job of grasping the viewer’s attention. The costumes and makeup are great, and the editing and music are excellent. There’s no gore in the film, and to be honest it didn’t actually need any to be effective. It was entertaining and totally absorbing regardless. The Psychics is ominous and eerie. It’s spooky and unnerving, and overall just a solid low budget indie horror film. If you’re looking for something a little off the beaten path, do yourself a favor and check this one out. It’s a disturbing psychological thriller with plenty of suspense and a surprise ending you don’t want to miss.
