Leigh Whannell will be writing the Escape from New York remake

Leigh Whannell who is well known in the horror universe from such films as the Saw Franchise, Insidious as well as his directorial debut UPGRADE which he wrote has been hired to write ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK for FOX.THR reports,

“Sources say that while there is no deal for him to direct, the door is open for that possibility. Whannell is kickstarting Escape with a new vision for the project that sources say will retain elements of the original but bring innovative ideas to the table. One of Whannell’s goals is to avoid the bloated tentpole remake path that afflicted the reboots of other 1980s-era movies such as Robocop and Total Recall.”

Truth be told I think he can do an excellent job with the film, he can do violence, humor (not too much to ruin a movie, but enough the lighten the mood for the film) He is working on the Invisible man remake as we speak. Leigh has a lot of potential and can deliver I just hope he doesn’t go the route of the previous films with the “TWIST” ending where everything is wrapped up but with the movies like this I think he’s going to bring something unique to the table and not rely on his writing trademark. No word yet on the cast but John Carpenter will be the executive producer. Fingers crossed he does the sound track as well.
