What will we learn about Ripley in Alien: Paradise Lost?

When asked to do a piece for women in horror month there was no hesitation on who I would choose first. I chose Sigourney Weaver’s timeless character Ellen Ripley, a woman I’ve admired and tried to emulate my entire life.

The role of Ellen Ripley was perfectly cast using Sigourney Weaver, and I can’t imagine anyone else as Ripley. Sigourney has the perfect physical demeanor for the role, tall, lean, handsome, not traditionally beautiful but beautiful nonetheless. The reason I bring up her looks is not to objectify her but to point out the care taken so that her appearance wouldn’t be objectified. Her actions, intelligence, and leadership make her attractive.

Will Sigourney Weaver return for Alien 5?

Sigourney Weaver was highly praised for her role and even nominated for an Academy Award, which is no small feat because the academy doesn’t give much recognition to horror and sci-fi films, and it continues to be that way even today.

Let’s focus a bit on who the character of Ellen Ripley is and why she’s an important female character in horror (possibly the most important) and an important role model to women in general.

Sigourney Weaver as Ellen RipleyEllen Ripley encompasses a lot of roles, many of them not traditional roles for females especially considering the time these movies were made. She’s an important crew member (warrant officer) aboard a spaceship – The Nostromo and later works her way up to Lieutenant (first class). She’s viewed as an equal and integral member of the ship’s team. Even when she argues and is rude she is never shut down for being a woman she’s shut down for being an ass. We see her in the role of mother when she meets and cares for Newt and when we learn of the loss of her own daughter Amanda. We see her as a caring animal lover to her cat Jonsey. We see her in the role of lover but not as arm candy as an equal half of a partnership. We see her as a leader, both as physically and intellectually competent as her male counterparts. Ripley makes the tough calls but is willing to take risks and sacrifice her own personal safety when protecting those she cares about, while still managing to look badass doing it.

Sigourney Weaver as Ellen RipleyRipley will always be my favorite woman in horror and my personal hero. It is my hope that one day when women are viewed equally in the horror community, she will be recognized as the mold that all other strong female characters were cast from.

Grotesque: A Guilt-Free Pleasure

Grotesque (2009) is a Japanese torture porn film directed by Koji Shiraishi.
First of all, I’d like to say I’m not a big fan of the term “torture porn” as it’s used in a derogatory fashion by film snobs to discredit an entire genre and I find it offensive, but when it comes to the movie Grotesque there is simply no better description. The antagonist, a “doctor”, kidnaps a young couple and tortures them for sexual arousal, promising their release if they succeed in making him excited, making this torture porn by definition.

The movie is honest about what it is and doesn’t pussyfoot around pretending to have a plot or trying to develop characters; it just dives right in.

Our young couple wakes up gagged and tied to a table and is asked if they would die for each other. There is a brief little flashback to offer us some insight and let us know they were on a first date; that is as much backstory as the viewer will get.

From there it gets all molesty. I appreciate the fact that this movie advocates equality between the sexes because both are manhandled accordingly, and every torture is doled out evenly.

After the molestation, we proceed to chainsaw surgery, the removal of nipples, nails to the scrotum and a graphic penis removal, which succeeds in finally arousing our good doctor, and he woefully admits that they have won (curse them!) and will be released.

The two wake up in a sterile hospital room where all their parts (except one) have been reattached and they’re healing nicely. I was a tad confused at first in this scene and wasn’t sure if it was a dream – it’s not. Either way, it gives us a chance to catch our breath before the next onslaught.

Their tormentor reappears and promises to release them once they are healed. He then changes his mind and back to the racks they go.

The next scene was a real nail-biter. The male protagonist is given an intestine tether (his own) and has the chance to save the female… he almost makes it and you truly are rooting for him along with the doctor who is shouting encouragements at him.

The end of this movie is a bit silly and provides comic relief after the hard watch the viewer has just endured. The comedy paired with the fact that we have no attachment to the characters makes this movie a guilt-free pleasure allowing us to walk away with minimal psychological damage.

5/5  for Grotesque

Grotesque is not a fantastic movie, but it accomplished everything it set out to do.

The Onania Club Facebook page-Tom Six tweetAfter the second Human Centipede film, fans were expecting something really special for the third one but it didn’t live up to most people’s expectations. I didn’t hate the movie I just felt they were released in the wrong order the third should have been the second and the second should have been the big finale. A lot of critics were making claims like “he’s beginning to believe his own hype” and “ It’s time for Tom Six to grow up”. I disagree, I feel his films are exactly what they claim to be – shocking, disturbing, and extreme. As for “the hype”, he skillfully creates it himself. Masterfully marketing himself as an accomplished shock peddler, he has people worked into a frenzy before his movies even come out. That being said I’m ready for something new from him and eager to see what he else he can do.

Tom Six tweet - Part of a frame from The Onania ClubFor those of you who don’t know (I certainly didn’t), Onania or Onanism is a form of masturbation and or the act of “pulling out”. That is the only real clue we’re given. Other than that, unfortunately, I can’t tell you a whole heck of a lot about The Onania Club because he’s being incredibly tight-lipped about the whole thing. During an interview, Tom stated,

The Onania Club will be a very original, highly perverted black comedy that will shake up the world yet again.

He goes on to say the film will be:

The most politically incorrect inhumane horror flick ever unleashed on mankind.

He also feels it will be far more extreme than The Human Centipede franchise… I certainly hope so, Tom. I am ready to be wowed, and I think if anyone can accomplish a genuine shocker, it’s Tom Six.

Being a huge fan of Martyrs (2008) I was pretty excited to learn that its director Pascal Laugier is making a new film called Incident in a Ghost Land. The film is set to release sometime in April of this year.

The film stars the incredibly beautiful Mylene Farmer, a very famous French singer in real life, successfully selling more than 30 million records in France. She is considered one of the most successful recording artists of all time in France. Alongside Farmer co-stars Crystal Reed (from TV’s Gotham) and Anastasia Philipps (a lovely young Canadian Actress).

Incident in a Ghost Land (2018)The script is described as having a Stephen King vibe to it and the film as “dark” and “scary”. It’s about a mother Colleen (Farmer) and her two daughters Beth (reed) and Vera (Philipps) who upon the death of Colleen’s aunt inherit her house. On the first night in their new home, there is a home invasion and Colleen is forced to fight to save her daughters lives.

Incident in a Ghost Land (2018)Sixteen years later, Beth becomes a famous horror writer and has a happy family; on the other hand, Vera can’t cope with her past trauma and has become mentally unstable and paranoid. The two sisters continue to live in the dead aunt’s home. Mother and daughters reunite and the strange events begin.

Incident in a Ghost Land (2018)Incident in a Ghost Land sounds a bit “vanilla” and like a story that has been done a thousand times before — not the extreme cinema experience I was expecting. The trailer did nothing to improve my opinion, so I decided to revisit the original Martyrs trailer to see how the two lined up. The Martyrs trailer definitely appears more violent and extreme from the get-go, but it doesn’t reveal much of the actual story or the depths it goes to. At a first glance, it looks like a gritty revenge movie. I’m hoping Incident in a Ghost Land will also be much more than what we see on the surface, and I remain optimistic and excited for its release.

A Serbian Film (2010): It’s Fucking Art!

In a desensitized world when shock truly does have value, along comes A Serbian Film, and here we are 8 years later still discussing it and reeling from the controversy. It’s a film that has ruined a lot of other films for me, making them seem colorless by comparison.

If, like me, you’re a fan of A Serbian Film, then you know it’s not something you admit to just anyone or casually discuss at family dinner. I used to find myself constantly on the defense regarding my love of this film, but now I refuse to be. I no longer justify why I like it or why it’s my second favorite movie of all time; I defend the movie itself. Before I get into the reasons why, let’s just quickly go over the movie’s plot and content for those who may not have watched it yet.

Milos, a semi-retired porn star, is struggling to provide for his wife and young son. When Milos’ former co-star comes by and offers him a role in an “art film” being made by a visionary and promising new director, it seems like his troubles are over. So far everything sounds pretty tame, right? Let’s fast forward to after the shooting of the “art film” starts and watch as it begins a downward spiral into depravity that would make the Marquis de Sade blush.

The areas causing the most controversy are the film’s depiction of child abuse, forcing a minor to watch a sexual act, raping a newborn, and raping a child. There are many other graphic, sexually violent scenes, but the aforementioned really get the censors riled up. For these reasons, the film has been heavily edited and banned in many countries, making an uncut copy somewhat difficult to find. Fear not, however, as Unearthed is releasing an uncut version with tons of extras and a much-anticipated documentary on the film.

Now back to my defense of the movie. It’s often assumed that I will use the same political defense the director Srdjan Spasojevic claims. Spasojevic insists he spent years trying to perfectly put on film how it felt to grow up in the midst of a very chaotic time in Serbia. He states that the infant rape and necrophilia show how the government rapes its citizens from birth until after death. Spasojevic also states, “this is a diary of our own molestation by the Serbian government”. Although these are not the reasons why I support the film, they were successful in getting me to investigate a little further into Serbian politics.

I personally don’t use the political pretense to justify this movie, and quite frankly I call bullshit. I believe Spasojevic wanted to make a shocking movie and once the backlash came, he used his carefully prepared political statement as a defense. I defend this movie simply because it’s art. Art that makes you really feel something, be it shock, anger, disgust, or horror, forces you to put down the fucking phone and watch. It makes you feel genuine emotions, powerful ones. For that reason alone, A Serbian Film is worth defending and remains one of the most engaging cinematic experiences of my life. I applaud it for pushing boundaries I didn’t even know I had.
