Gameplay

Betrayal at House on the Hill is a board game by Avalon Hill Games. To play Betrayal at House on the Hill you need a minimum of 3 players and a maximum of 6 players. Betrayal at House on the Hill is for ages 12+ and takes about an hour to finish a game. Each player gets a character tile that has two different sides with a character on each side that has its own stats.  Once the characters are chosen, you place plastic clips on the character’s base stat and then place your corresponding character piece in the entrance hall of the house. We had some problems with the plastic clips and had to place paper slips behind them to keep them in place.

The board itself is made up as you go with room tiles that you draw as you move through doors to discover new parts of the three story house. When you move from room to room, you will often have to draw one of the following three cards: item card, event card, or omen card. Once the room is discovered and the card is drawn, anyone else who goes into that room cannot draw that card. Item cards are self-explanatory - you gain an item. Event cards cause something to happen, such as an effect or forced dice rolls. Omen cards are much like item cards because you acquire a usable tool or gain a companion who can raise your stats. However, omen cards are the biggest deal because they force a haunt roll at the end of your turn.

Haunt rolls can trigger the haunt or allow the players to play together peacefully. In order to start the haunt, the person who draws the omen card must roll a number less than the amount of drawn omen cards. When the haunt begins, one player becomes the traitor and the rest become the heroes. At this time the traitor will leave the room with the rule book for the traitors called the Traitors Tome, and the heroes will stay in the room and read from their rule book called Secrets of Survival. The haunt is chosen by the room and omen card combination of the player who made the roll that started the haunt. After reading the scenario, the traitor and the heroes create plans on how to destroy each other.  In total there are 50 different haunt scenarios to play. The only time players can start to die is after the haunt begins. Death is achieved by losing all your stats in a skill. Your skills are speed, might, sanity, and knowledge. You can be attacked mentally or physically and you can divide the damage inside the appropriate category.

My Thoughts

I absolutely love the design for Betrayal at House on the Hill. Visually it is pretty spooky. The box has a wonderfully creepy blue/green and black color palate with yellow accents. It looks very Lovecraftian to me. The cards have different symbols representing them with a raven for the omen card, a bull’s skull as the item card, and a spiral for the event cards. To me they are reminiscent of Poe, but that might be influenced by the omen card. The designs on the character cards are excellent. They all look pretty disheveled and a bit nervous, e.g., they really they look as if they could be smack dab in the middle of a Tales from the Crypt comic. Unfortunate. The miniatures that represent the characters are okay. Personally I would have preferred one color models so I could just paint them myself. The little girl model is creepy as hell, though. She’s just a little girl smiling from ear to ear with a teddy bear that has a x shaped patch of what I believe is bandage tape. Why she is happy that she is stuck in a scary abandoned house on a hill with a bunch of (probable) strangers is beyond me. Not once was the person who played her picked as the traitor so maybe she just waits to see who is left over to feast on or do whatever it is creepy children do to their victims. One of ours, the blue lady, had a hard lean forward and looked as if she was Michael Jackson. This is because she’s just a plastic model that was packed in an unfortunate manner. All attempts to correct her posture have been futile.

Playing Betrayal at House on the Hill was so much fun that as soon as the first game was over we immediately played it again. The first round was spent with myself exploring the entire third floor by myself and everyone else remaining on the ground floor until after the haunt started. My strategy was to go to an area to open as many rooms and hopefully gain as many skill upgrades through drawing cards as possible. That didn’t work out for me, and I actually ended up losing skills. I wanted to prolong the time before the haunt for as long as possible so every time someone had to make a haunt roll I was on the edge of my seat. Eventually it happened, and we played the haunt scenario known as Comes the Hero. I will not reveal anything about the haunt because part of the fun of the game is not knowing what you will be doing until you are doing it.

Long story short, the heroes lost. I was on the hero side and losing sucked. Losing sucks normally, but I thought we could have pulled our plan off, but we had no idea what the traitor had to do to win and it turned out that we were in the perfect place for him to achieve his win. The second haunt we played was called The Feast. I was on the hero side again, and we lost. Again. You have to be very well organized to win against the traitors that I played against.

The dybbuk is a spirit that comes from Jewish folklore. The term cannot be found in either Talmudic literature or the Kabbalah. Instead of the using the term we know it as today the phenomenon is referenced as an evil spirit or sometimes unclean spirit. Dybbuk as a term was born in the 17th century and was created by German and Polish Jews.

A dybbuk is a malevolent disembodied spirit that can possess a person or other living things. This spirit can attach itself to a person for many different reasons and causes chaos in that unfortunate person’s life. Possession can happen to any one, but some people may be more easily possessed than others. If you have committed a secret sin, if you are a women living in homes with a neglected mezuzot, or even if you have a connection with the person who became a dybbuk. The reason why a soul finds itself in this unfortunate form can vary in many different ways. Most often it is because the soul is suffering from being cut off from God because of a sin they had committed and not repented for. One can also become a dybbuk simply because there was unfinished business that needed to be attended to. As soon as a person has been possessed they will begin to change. Simply possessing someone is not the end game for this malevolent spirit. They have a goal that they need to accomplish and they will use the possessed to obtain that goal. Some people believe that when the dybbuk has accomplished what it wants it then will leave the possessed person.

It is recommended to have an exorcism done as soon as possible. The excorcist in this case should be a great Rabbi or a Kabbalist. During the exorcism the exorcist will ask the dybbuk for its name and find out the reason behind the possession to better understand how to force it out. Often times the exorcist will deal with the sin that turned the spirit and caused it to become cut off from God. Dealing with this form of possession was first discovered among the Kabbalists of Safed.

This lovely urban legend comes from Japan. The Kuchisake-onna, Slit-mouthed Woman, legend comes from Japan’s Heian period (794-1185). It is a story of a violent man and a vain woman turned vengeful spirit. Kuchisake-onna translates to slit-mouthed woman in English.

Kuchisake-onna was a beautiful, vain woman.  She was married to a violent and jealous samurai. The woman cheated on her husband and when he found out he was enraged. He violently attacked her and gave her a Glasgow smile. After doing so he said to her “Who will think you are beautiful now?”

The tale sounds like one to warn against infidelity, but in the late 1970s Kuchisake-onna reappears as a vengeful spirit.

Kuchisake-onna is said to wear a brown trench coat and wears a surgeon’s mask to hide her going, bloody Glasgow smile. Appearing to people traveling alone at night or on a foggy day she would ask the unfortunate person a seemingly innocent question. Do you think I’m beautiful? This simple question could land you in very hot water. When you tell her yes she proceeds to pull down the surgeon’s mask to show you her still gory wound. She will ask you How about now? If you answer no she reveals a pair of scissors and will kill you on the spot, but if you answer yes she will cut you with the scissors so you too can have a permanent smile. She was often seen lurking near children because their innocent answers would allow her to gain more victims.

Do not fear dear reader for there are a couple of ways to avoid both of these fates.

  1. If you respond with You’re average, So-so or Am I beautiful? You will be able to confuse her for long enough to run away. And no, you cannot simply run away. If you do not confuse her she will be able to simply reappear in front of you and even follow you home.
  2. If you give her hard amber candy she will be pleased and simply let you go unharmed.
  3. If you tell her that you are late for an appointment she will apologize and let you go to your appointment without incident.

The sightings from the late 1970s may have an actual living, well formerly, culprit. A corner came across documents of a woman who was hit by a car while she was chasing a young child. This woman just so happened to have similar scars as Kuchisake-onna. It is highly likely that she was the cause of the terror and rekindling of an old urban legend.

The legend of Kuchisake-onna has made its way onto the big screen. The films based off of this story are as follows: Carved aka A Slit-Mouthed Woman aka Kuchisake-onna (2007) and its prequel Carved 2 aka Kuchisake-Onna 2: The Scissors Massacre aka A Slit-Mouthed Woman 2 aka Kuchisake-onna 2 (2008).

Squidward's Suicide and Red Mist

Originally a Creepypasta story, Squidward's Suicide did not take long to reach urban legend status. For those of you who don't know, a Creepypasta is a horror story written online to strike fear into its readers. It is basically the new wave of campfire tales.

There are different types of Creepypastas like entities, paranormal, killers, locations, and lost episodes. Squidward's Suicide/Red Mist fall into the category of lost episodes.  Squidward's Suicide was the first of the two stories and was written from the point of view of an intern at Nickelodeon studios. Red Mist is sort of a sequel/retelling that cleans up the unknown part of the story. In my opinion the story is better without Red Mist.

The Urban Legend Squidward's Suicide

The story takes place in 2005 and is a story told by a former intern of Nickelodeon studios. He was working along side the editor one day when a video came in that would change his life. It was supposed to be an episode of Spongebob Squarepants, but what they got was a horror show. The begining of the episode starts off like a normal episode with Squidward trying to play clarinet while Spogebob and Patrick are running hijinks outside.  After Squidward asks them to knock it off things start to change. Characters in the audience at his concert are drawn with hyper realistic eyes, the audio cuts off and suddenly begins again with the sound of wind through a forest. Intense focused shots of Squidward have spliced in pictures of mutilated dead children. That's right, mutilated dead children. Read all the gritty story details here.

The Urban Legend Red Mist

The Red Mist story goes almost the same as the original Squidward's Suicide tale. Instead of Spongebob and Patrick interrupting Squidward's playing it is a Scottish sales-fish. Squidward slams the door in his face and the fish knocks again with an ominous warning that the red mist is coming. I believe the point of this Scottish sales-fish is to lend an answer to a tale that was better off without one. At the end of the retelling the writer of the Red Mist reports that a man named Andrew Skinner was the maker of the episode. Skinner is allegedly a disgruntled animator from Scotland who is also the one who killed the kids in the video. He is supposedly in jail for child murder. The end of the story also accuses the writer of Squidward's Suicide of making a copy of the tape and trying to distribute the film through online auction websites. --So whoever wrote the Red Mist hates loose ends that were designed to add to a stories mystery and has some jerk grudge against the original story teller? Honestly I hate the Red Mist.-- If you have the desire to read the retelling and bow tying you can find it here.

It's not hard to see how this Creepypasta became an urban legend, it  has all the great elements for a lasting story. Spongebob Squarepants has been on the air since 1999. As of this writing that is 16 years. That allows for a larger audience to be captured by the urban legend. The original story leaves off with a bunch of questions that could have been open to debate. --Again another reason why I hate Red Mist-- To those who say a Creepypasta can not be an urban legend I say this to you - what is so different once the story has been circulated enough that it has people asking if it is real or not.

TAMPA FLORIDA

Have you ever wondered if the places around you are haunted? Most of the posts you see are usually the most haunted in the world or in a certain state. How frustrating! Not everyone can travel that much, and have the extra time in the day to research what's haunted around them. Well, that's okay because I am here to do some research for you. My goal is to bring you at least five haunted places, one city at a time. The first in this series will be of the town I live in: Tampa Florida.

Tampa Theater

The Tampa Theater was built in 1926 and was designed the architect John Eberson. His inspiration for the theater came from the gardens of Italy, and France with Persian shrines and Spanish patios mixed in. It is a breath taking theater complete with a ceiling that mimics the sky.  It is absolutely gorgeous. I fully recommend going, and going early so you can take in the design without distracting you from the movie/play/concert.
Reports
If you ask anyone who works for the Tampa Theater they will tell you it is haunted. There has been reports of cold spots, ghostly figures, the sounds of doors opening and closing, hearing footsteps, and the sounds of doors opening and closing. One of the ghostly figures that has been seen is of a woman. It is believed that she died before the theater was built and that she is waiting for her fiance. There are also reports of seeing Foster Fink Finley in the projection room when no one else is around. Foster Fink Finley was the projectionist for the Tampa Theater from 1930 to 1965. His final day on the job was also his final day alive. He collapsed in the projection room and died that day of a heart attack. During an investigation paranormal researcher reported seeing someone in an old Tampa Theater uniform. It is believed that it might be Robert Lanier, Sr. Robert Lanier, Sr was a ticket taker employed at the Tampa Theater and had the only known death on the property. On May 29th, 1959 he was found near the box office on the marble tile. His skull was crushed and it is still unknown if he was murdered or if he fell down the stairs.

 

University of Tampa Plant Hall

Originally Plant Hall was the Tampa Bay Hotel. Henry Plant opened the hotel in 1891 and it boasted 500 rooms within 5 stories. The hotel was built to be the best and most lavish hotel of the time. If you ask me, they nailed it. It is a beautiful ornate Victorian style building with Moorish minarets. It is eye catching to say the least. The hotel closed in 1930, but in late 1933 Tampa Bay Junior College moved in and later became the University of Tampa.
Reports
Plant Hall has a variety of haunted experiences. People have reported seeing a man in a three piece brown suit with red eyes. In one event when the witness turned a fled from him he reappeared in the next room drinking tea. There have been reports of seeing Victorian era servants still carrying out their duties. On professor reported seeing a mist that had a figure like shape to it that moved through the wall as soon as he began to pay attention to it. Many have heard whispers, chatter, and dice rolling. Students have reported having the lights shut off on them while studying alone. Even if people don't see or hear anything a lot of people have reported the feeling of being watched.

Britton Cinema 8 is situated in a shopping plaza that was built in 1956. It has changed hands a number of times through out the years.
Reports
Employees of Britton Cinema 8 have heard their names being called and voices inside of empty theaters. One guest reported the chairs next to her creaking as if someone was pushing the seat down to sit next to her. Another guest said that as he was enjoying a movie inside of an empty theater he started to notice people appearing in the seats in front of him. The women's restroom has it's own resident ghost. People have heard stall doors close and lock on their own as well as toilets flush. However, I couldn't find reports of the water being run. Gross ghosts; wash your hands.

 

Crown Colony House [Busch Gardens]

Located inside of Busch Gardens the Crown Colony House was originally called The Old Swiss House. The Old Swiss House was built in 1964 and was a replica of a Swiss restaurant. In 1982 it was shut down and used by the entertainment department for rehearsals and auditions. It was later renovated and opened back up in 1990 as the Crown Colony House.
Reports
Employees of the Crown Colony House have encountered a mist in the dining room that they believe to be an eight year old girl named Wendy. She's also said to stop the elevator between floors. During closing employees have reported hearing voices, laughing, and children playing inside of building. Guests and employees have said to have seen an elderly bartender and some have also caught a glimpse of a pianist sitting at the piano before he vanishes. A full apparition of a woman wearing a white night gown has also been seen by employees. Many have experienced flickering lights and unexplained cold spots.

 

Sunshine Skyway Bridge

The original Sunshine Skyway Bridge was built in 1954. It had a vertical clearance of 150 feet and sported only two lanes. In 1971 they added a southbound span. However, tragedy struck twice in 1980. On January 28th, 1980 USCGC Blackthorn [a buoy tender] collided with Capricorn [a tanker] while trying to pass underneath the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Twenty-three servicemen died in the collision. On May 9th, 1980 MV Summit Venture [a freighter] was passing under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge when it hit one of the support columns. The bridge collapsed taking 8 vehicles with it. One of the vehicles was a greyhound bus that was taking a group of college kids to Miami. Thirty-five people died in that incident; there were only two survivors. One man swam to shore and the other was able to stop his car 14 inches before the collapsed area of the bridge. A new bridge was built and opened in 1987. Sunshine Skyway Bridge has 4 lanes of traffic and a vertical clearance of 197 feet. There have been upwards of 200 suicides from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. In an attempt to counteract the high rate of jumpers the state has put in six crisis hotline phones along the center span in 1999 and began 24-hour patrols.
Reports
In the 60's and 70's people started reporting to police of potential jumpers on the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Sometimes when the officers went out to help they could find no evidence of someone being their search for a body would turn up nothing. These reports are ongoing. Some drivers have stopped to pick up a you woman hitch hiking on the bridge, but the closer they get to the summit the more upset she gets. When the person turns to console her she is gone. There has also been reports of her making it all the way to the end of the bridge only to have disappeared leaving a wet spot on the seat. Parts of the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge are now used a piers and are a popular fishing spot. On the tenth anniversary of the bridge collapse people reported seeing an old style grey hound bus filled with young people that were just staring ahead. People also report hearing screams and squealing breaks early in the morning on the pier. A paranormal dive team went to investigate under the bridge and found a strange unexplained light phenomenon. Some have seen a pioneer woman wearing a grey dress and hovering over the water underneath the bridge. Witnesses say she has a sullen look to her and she never interacts or notices them. No one is sure where she came from or what happened to her in her life.

GAME REVIEW: Spooky’s House of Jump Scares

Spooky's House of Jump Scares is by far the cutest horror game you will ever play. You begin the game by being greeted by an adorable ghost girl named Spooky who invites you to take a fun filled walk through her creepy castle. This first person horror game takes you through one thousand different rooms of jump scaring fun! Through the first couple of rooms you'll find adorable little cut outs of ghosts, pumpkins, jelly monsters and other pleasant things pop out at you. They are incredibly cute and harmless. As you progress, you being to find notes of someone rambling about being lost in the house. Oops, I hope you've been leaving bread crumbs. From there, the game begins to throw at you actual harmful enemies.

The graphics are quite basic. It looks kind of like the original Doomexcept softer around the edges. However, it works excellently for this game. It adds to the charming everything is safe and cute aspect of the game. The music is low key but adds an air of creepy to the game in its own right. The noises accompanied with the creatures are excellent. Watch out for the sound levels though. It really adds to the jump scare. When I played it, the sound was way too loud, and I had to manually turn it down through my sound mixer. You use W,A,S,D to move and the mouse to look. Mouse sensitivity wasn't too bad for me, but if it is for you then prepare to lock your wrist. That is because unfortunately there is currently no way to adjust mouse sensitivity in game. The only thing you can actually adjust in game is the resolution, and you don't even have control over that. Hopefully in future updates this will change.

Spooky's House of Jump Scares is free to play on Steam and Indie DB (database). On Steam you can purchase the sound track and more skins for the house. Not literally skins though, it's just a term for themes.

Made by Lag Studios that is run by only two people. Oh and! On their website it has a TBA (to be announced) for a mobile version of the game. So you can be adorably scared on the go. Until then be sure to download Spooky's House of Jump Scares and try it out for yourself.

GAME REVIEW: Fingerbones (2014)

Fingerbones is a very odd, indie, psychological horror game. It is less a "game" and more of a "narrative"... think walking simulator. You just wander around the room clicking on everything you can until you find the next piece of the puzzle. You begin the game in the first room with no weapons or knowledge of what you're really supposed to do. Looking around the room you find some scattered notes. They're written by... yourself - or rather - the character that you are playing. Like a sort of found journal. Using the information from the notes you are able to unlock the other rooms in the game. The point of this is to get the rest of the notes in this safe house to remember who your character is. You are not going to like him. If you do like the character please do the world a favor and lock yourself away forever, and unsubscribe from my YouTube channel.

The first note you find throws a thought into your head screaming "This guy is an asshole!" That thought is correct - but hold on it only gets worse. I can not stress enough how completely terrible this guy is. It really hits harder when you finish the game and think about the contents of those notes. No spoilers needed here. because…

The game only takes about thirty minutes to complete in its entirety. There is no save option so make sure that if you exit you do so on purpose and not accidentally. I did that within the first 5 minutes because I forgot that one of the doors is the game exit. Whoops! The music in it is perfect for this creepy lonely shelter. In the game you can hear eerie sounds of a child. They really ratchet up the tension because you are sure that when you turn around or finish reading there will be an angry something ready to get you. Which makes up for the basic graphics. They're so bad. The whole game looks like Minecraft with a sepia filter. The notes look like QR codes. If you are a graphics snob, then you should not bother with this game.

The game was made and produced by David Szymanski. It is currently available on Steam, IndieDB, and Game Jolt for free. If you have thirty minutes to waste and would like to lose a little faith in humanity then go for it. GAME REVIEW: Clown House

GAME REVIEW: Clown House

Clown House is a horror game. Oh wait, I'm sorry. I spelled that wrong. Clown House is a HORRIBLE game.

The game starts up with a little insight into what's going on: You're trapped in a house with lunatic clowns due to a "MEANINGLESS REASON". Literally. That's what it says. That right there should have been a red flag. The creator didn't even care enough to take maybe ten seconds to give a reason as to why you're in a house with crazy clowns. So you (naturally) want/have to find a key to get out of the house. Around the house there are clowns. Just kinda sitting around, doing nothing. The clowns don't immediately attack you, and you can't shoot them until after they have decided to kill you. Thankfully there's a music spike to let you know you're about to be attacked, so you have more than enough time to defend yourself. The clowns are very slow. Mostly they're just lazing around, disinterested in your existence. When they attack you, it seems like they're thinking, "Hey man, it's not personal. I'm just doing my job. Look, you can still get away!" rather than "I'm a lunatic clown and I'm going kill you and wear your skin!" Oh, and the key is always in plain sight just sitting on top a dresser or another random table.

The graphics are okay, Playstation One-era looking, and in black and white. For some reason they put this weird shine on everything so it looks like everything has a layer of goo over it. You have to choose between moving forward and having the gun out, which I hate because I prefer being prepared. The set mouse sensitivity is insane, so if you do choose to play it be sure to fix that. The sound is boring, and I can barely recall anything outside of the 'hey a clown is creeping toward you' noise.

GAME REVIEW: Five Nights at Freddy’s

This game is a first for me. I have never played a game in which you are utterly defenseless when faced with the enemy. I'm used to my jump scares being followed by spastic gun fire. In Five Nights at Freddy's (FNAF) there is no, "Oh, but I can just shoot it". You're forced to look into the lifeless eyes of your mechanical murder. Or, in my case, the inside of my eyelids as I scream in helpless shock and fear.

Five Nights at Freddy's puts you into the role of an over-night security guard during his shifts in a Chuck 'E Cheese-like establishment. You have a simple midnight 6:00 a.m. shift, all by yourself, sitting in a security observation post. I mean, you could sit there and play solitaire all night if you wanted to, right? NOPE. As much as you want to play Minesweeper, the mechanical puppets want to shove you inside of them, literally. Which leads to your horrifying death. Seriously, imagine that.

The gameplay is very simple: You have a touchscreen tablet to visually check the various rooms in the building and two doors with a Light Switch button and a Door Close button each. Apparently, Freddy's is not doing so well financially. You have only a certain amount of power to draw upon, and that limited power supply drains while you are checking the building, closing one of the doors, or turning the hall light on. When you check the rooms, you can see where the puppets are at. Sometimes they are not where you last saw them - which leads to rapid checking of each of the rooms to try to find them.

The graphics are not the best ever, but they get the job done. Think Playstation One era. However, the sound is on point. For me, the best part of a good jump scare is the sound that accompanies it - this is commonly called the spike. Five Nights at Freddy's nails it on their spikes! The ambient sound really puts you in the mood of an empty building filled with blood-thirsty mechanical puppets.

That being said, this game scared the crap out of me. It's scared the crap out of a lot of people, and the fan base for Five Nights at Freddy's is incredible. This game series is only four years old, and already there are an insane number of game/conspiracy theories and various fan-fics! The creator of Five Nights at Freddy's, Scott Cawthon, has pumped out three sequels to this game in a year when most developers can't even get one game out in a year. Everything about this game is crazy - from the plot to the fans - and I think that's how everyone likes it.
