Roku Horror

ROKU HORROR: Free On-Demand Horror Films on the Roku

We picked up a Roku device a while back, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that there were quite a few channels available to watch horror completely free. Granted, there are commercial breaks, but still, free horror is always a good thing.

With more and more people opting to “cut the cable” and do away with cable and satellite TV, I decided to sit down and look at some of the free on-demand horror available on the Roku device.

This is by no means a complete list. This is just a list of the ones that I feel are worth looking into if you yourself decide to go this route, or if you own a Roku and want to enjoy some free horror.

My goal here isn’t to compare these channels. Only to let you know what each one carries and let you decide for yourself if it’s something you might be interested in. They’re all free. There’s no reason you can’t enjoy every single one if you so desire.

I’ve given each channel a short description and a list of mainstream and not-so-mainstream horror or genre titles that they host.

Also, please keep in mind that some of these channels rotate their films regularly, so what they have one week might be gone the next.

Roku Horror

Popcornflix

PopcornflixDecent selection of mainstream films and TV covering all genres. I was surprised to see Sam and Max in their library of Kids TV since it’s a kind of obscure (but awesome) children’s cartoon. Their horror library is a little over 100 films with a decent selection. You also have the option to watch some films “ad-free” for a nominal charge.

Notable Titles

The Last House on the Left, Phenomena, The House by the Cemetery

My Picks

The Revenant (the 2009 horror comedy, not the 2015 DiCaprio film), John Carpenter’s Body Bags, The ‘Burbs

Crackle

CrackleCrackle is another one of those channels that covers all the genres. Their library rotates movies pretty quickly, so if you find something you want to watch, you had better watch it before it disappears. Their horror movie library is very small, but it has a few films that aren’t normally found on the free services.

Notable Titles

Annabelle, Flatliners, Misery

My Picks

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, Lake Placid, Darkman

The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel
This one offers a variety of genres, from family movies and classic westerns to talk shows and music concerts, there’s something for everyone here. The TV show library has Unsolved Mysteries, Ghost Cases, and The Dead Zone. The horror library is pretty small (less than 50 films) but still worth checking out.

Notable Titles

I Know What You Did Last Summer, You’re Next, Leprechaun

My Picks

After.Life, Black Water, Leprechaun: Origins

Tubi TV

Tubi TVAnother one that covers all genres, Tubi TV has a TON of films, and their horror selection is very impressive. 200 films, including a bunch of the After Dark Horrorfest films. There’s a lot of filler material, but overall, it’s a solid channel. Oh, and there’s also a selection of cult classics featuring Elvira.

Notable Titles

Elvira’s Movie Macabre, Night of the Demons, Motel Hell

My Picks

Hell Baby, Blood Punch, The Gravedancers

Shout Factory TV

Shout Factory TVThe big draw here for me is the collection of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Rifftrax films. I really don’t need to say more, but Shout Factory TV does have a small collection of horror films featuring audio commentary, which is kind of cool. There’re also some martial arts films, westerns, and an eclectic blend of TV comedy and animation.

Notable Titles

Nightbreed, The House That Dripped Blood, Nosferatu the Vampyre

My Picks

MST3K and Rifftrax

Filmrise Horror

Filmrise HorrorFilmrise hosts several free channels, all dedicated to different genres. Comedies, sci-fi, documentaries, thriller, and horror all have their own channels. Their horror channel has an okay library of stuff all split up into different categories. There’s a category for TV shows featuring true crime with twelve seasons of Unsolved Mysteries. Their movies collection isn’t huge, but it’s decent. Most of it seems to be filler material, the kind of stuff that would have been “direct-to-video” back in the day. The saving grace here is that they have a decent selection of Troma films which I rather enjoy, but for someone with any amount of taste and decency, it’s probably not a big selling point.

Notable Titles

Unsolved Mysteries (TV show), Prom Night, The Toxic Avenger

My Picks

The Greasy Strangler, The Beast of Xmoor, Troma’s War

Midnight Pulp

Midnight PulpThis one has a good selection of cult and underground stuff at first glance, but they make finding the free movies annoying by mixing the free content with the “Pulp+” stuff that you have to pay to watch. Seriously, I’m not paying to watch Three on a Meathook or The Corpsegrinders again. They’re classic grindhouse flicks, but they’re not worth paying money to see a second time.

Notable Titles

Donnie Darko, Oldboy, Bad Taste

My Picks

Microwave Massacre, Island of Death, Carnival of Souls

Frightpix

FrightpixFrightpix is probably one of the best free channels for horror. A few hundred films all split up into different categories like slasher, zombie, creature feature, and a category just for bad movies. There’s a bit of the “direct-to-video” type filler material, but not as much as you’d expect.

Notable Titles

High Tension, Spider Baby, Sleepaway Camp

My Picks

Birdemic, Crush the Skull, Turkey Shoot

Mutant Sorority Pictures

Mutant Sorority PicturesYou get exactly what you’d expect with a name like Mutant Sorority Pictures. Lots of Troma titles. If you like trash cinema, you’ll want this one. When movies like Jack Frost 2 are in the “Popular” category, you know you’re scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Notable Titles

Surf Nazis Must DieTromeo and Juliet, Cannibal the Musical

My Picks

Bikini Swamp Girl Massacre, Poultrygeist, Stuff Stephanie in the Incinerator

My Retro Flix

My Retro FlixThis one has tons of movies and TV shows spanning all genres. Probably one of the best and most extensive collections on any free channel. The Marx Brothers, Shirley Temple, Abbott & Costello, The Three Stooges, and so many more. I could go on and on. There’s a horror category and a thriller category so be sure to check out both. If you like the CLASSIC classics, you need this one.

Notable Titles

Cannibal Holocaust, Todd Browning’s Freaks, Theater of Blood

My Picks

God Told Me To, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Terror

Free Grindhouse Flix Tonight

Free Grindhouse Flix TonightLots of grindhouse and exploitation stuff here. Quite a selection of Japanese Pink and softcore stuff as well. Not a lot of horror, but there are a few titles here worth checking out.

Notable Titles

Landmine Goes Click, Lisa and the Devil, The Chosen

My Picks

Hell House LLC, Savageland, Observance

Retromedia TV

Retromedia TVA slightly better selection than Free Grindhouse Flix Tonight, but not much. A LOT of the same films. It has fewer adult films and categories dedicated to Sword and Sandals, From the Jungle, Mad Scientists, Crime, and Adventure.

Notable Titles

Make Them Die Slowly, Monstrosity, The Vampire Bat

My Picks

The Suckling, Zombie Death House, The Killer Shrews
