Part two of a special two-part Saturday Night Shocker: The Amityville Horror

On November 13th, 1974, Butch DeFeo arrived Henry’s Bar, saying he was locked out of his house and couldn’t get back in or get in touch with anyone in his family. He and several friends went back to the house and Butch broke a window to get inside. He found his parents and younger brothers and sisters all shot to death in their beds.
The authorities arrived. The bodies were taken away and the police tried to console the distraught Butch. He said he would do anything he could to help and speculated that he thought a man named Louis Falini was responsible. Butch said Falini, who supposedly had ties to the mob, had a falling out with Ronald and was heard threatening the DeFeo family. Butch went to the police station, mostly for his own protection, while the police continued to analyze the crime scene. The longer Butch was questioned, the more inconsistencies crept up in his story. Finally, he confessed to killing his family.

Then Butch started changing his story. He said that Louis Falini and others came into the house and made him watch as they shot his family. After that, he said he and some friends, including Bobby Kelske, had been caught by Ronald searching for his stash of money. One of Butch’s friends shot his father and then killed the rest of the family to cover it up. Another version of the story had Butch and Dawn planning to kill the family together. Butch shot Ronald and Dawn shot Louise; Butch left the house, came back to find that Dawn had killed the children and he killed her in a fit of rage. Butch’s relatives also tried to intervene, saying the confession had been coerced by police brutality and that his rights had been violated when he was denied the legal counsel of a family friend who was a lawyer.
Butch DeFeo’s trial for the murder of his six family members began in October of 1975. His lawyer, William Weber, tenaciously pursued an insanity defense. He claimed Butch heard voices and that those voices eventually made him kill his family, even manifesting as a pair of black hands that gave him the gun. Howard Zolan, the psychiatrist who examined Butch, claimed that he had an antisocial personality disorder but did know what he was doing and was legally competent. There was also testimony from cellmates and guards where Butch was being held who heard him say he killed his family and say that he knew how to feign insanity well enough to be acquitted.
Ronald “Butch” DeFeo Jr. was found guilty of six counts of murder on November 21st, 1975. He was sentenced to life in prison.
After the loss in court, William Weber contacted acquaintances George and Kathy Lutz. They had a few glasses of wine and discussed things like the Lutz’s interest in the occult and transcendental meditation. They concocted a plan that started when the couple bought the DeFeo house and has never really ended.
After they fled the house, George and Kathy Lutz contacted Laura Didio, a reporter from a local news station, with their story and she put them in touch with paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The Warrens did a walk-through of the house with several people from a psychical research institute and claimed to feel negative supernatural energies due to the property’s history. They said the land had been used by the Shinnecock Indians as an asylum for their ill and insane. The house had also been owned by a man named John Ketchum, a practicing warlock who fled persecution in the Salem Witch Trials. The Warrens alleged that Butch practiced black magic, which may have turned him into a conduit for the spirits that possessed him and made him murder his family. Butch backs up the claims in his letters to Long Island-based medium Jackie Barrett, mentioning that he attended more than one black mass when he was a teenager.
George and Kathy contacted author Jay Anson, who turned their story into his book The Amityville Horror. The book and subsequent movie, starring Jame Brolin and Margot Kidder, were wildly successful. As William Weber had hoped, his plan did generate some attention for Butch but didn’t get his sentence reexamined and he couldn’t even profit from the media franchise. Instead of monetary compensation, Butch had notoriety inside prison as well as outside. He wrote to Jackie Barrett that he fought off an attack from the “Son of Sam” killer David Berkowitz when he and Berkowitz were in the same correctional facility and that he was also approached by people who bribed him to kill Berkowitz.
He was interviewed by renowned paranormal researcher Hans Holzer. Holzer reiterated the Warren’s story about possession and spirits of Native Americans tied to the property. He wrote a book based on the DeFeo family and their murder, the basis for the movie Amityville 2: The Possession. Holzer’s book was a fairly accurate portrayal of the malicious and domineering father and subservient mother who couldn’t remove her children from the abusive environment. He even included the incident where Butch pointed a rifle to his father’s head to make him stop beating his mother. Holzer took a huge liberty with the story, however, when he added the element of incest between the two oldest siblings. Butch has said his sister was his co-conspirator or that she committed some of the murders on her own but insists that they never had an incestuous relationship.
The Lutzes didn’t deny any of what they said happened to them in the house, despite William Weber’s claim that it was a story they fabricated together. The Lutzes sued Weber, as well as Paul Hoffman, who was originally going to write the book about the haunting, and others for invasion of privacy and mental distress. The claims were all dismissed for lack of evidence but George and Kathy never wavered in their accounts of things like unexplained loud noises and doors being ripped off the hinges. Neighbors report never hearing the noises George mentioned and the next owners of the house, the Cromartys, said that all of the doors had their original hardware and they never encountered anything supernatural. Nevertheless, George and Kathy Lutz believed their story so strongly they were able to take polygraph tests that showed no evidence of lying. Despite telling Laura Didio that he “didn’t want publicity,” George Lutz would introduce himself as “the Amityville guy.” George and Kathy went on a year-long promotional tour and left Danny in a monastery school where, in his 2012 documentary My Amityville Horror, Danny says the priests tried to perform exorcisms on him because they thought he was possessed by evil spirits.
Daniel Lutz comes off as abrasive and troubled. The documentary shows him going to therapy but being defensive when talking to his therapist. Her asks her about the most traumatic thing she’s ever experienced to gauge whether she can understand what he has been through. He insists that everything happened just as it did in his parents’ book.
Daniel’s dislike of George Lutz is evident whenever he mentions his stepfather. The strained family relationships didn’t withstand the publicity of the Amityville horror; Danny left home in his teens and George and Kathy divorced in the early 80s, which he says was the best thing his mother ever did. Daniel’s siblings declined to be interviewed and he doesn’t mention them. Despite the turbulence the claims of the haunting brought to his childhood, he interacts amiably with Laura Didio and Lorraine Warren when filmed with them in the documentary. Lorraine suggests leading Daniel and the film crew in a prayer over religious artifact she has on a necklace. Daniel beholds the article reverently but reacts with hostility upon finding out that one of the crew members present isn’t actually a believer. At the end of the documentary, the director asks if Daniel was ever approached about taking a lie detector test. He says, angrily and indignantly, that many people have suggested that but doesn’t say if he took one. The implication is that, unlike his parents, he doesn’t know if he would pass a polygraph.
The story of “America’s most famous haunting” is built on a foundation of lies and omissions of truth. The specters were abusive and selfish parents. The witnesses are people with reputations to protect. The restless spirits are the memories of the deceased and the troubled people still struggling with the legacy of 112 Ocean Avenue.

But wait! There’s more! This week marks the Vortexx debut of Orson Welles, playing a real-life 18th century magician and hypnotist known as Count Cagliostro. We’ve also got an eclectic assortment of aliens, including voluptuous moo n women and cheesy Neptune men, a moon beast who’s not from the moon, and a movie called Alien Zone that has no aliens in it. Toss in Charlie Chan, Raymond Burr, Bela Lugosi, and the Bee Girls for good measure, and you’ve got the makings for a great week of entertainment.

Swedish-born Warner Oland stars as everyone’s favorite Chinese detective in this tale of a man presumably drowned in a shipwreck who may not be as dead as everyone thinks he is. You can be sure that Charlie will get to the bottom of it all before the closing credits. In keeping with the theme of tonight’s movie, the movie breaks will be hosted from several “secret” locations.

Tuesday (04/11). 9:00 P.M. (ET) LORD BLOOD-RAH’S NERVE WRACKIN’ THEATRE presents HOUSE OF THE DEAD (1978). Not to be confused with the Uwe Boll abomination of the same name, tonight’s movie, also known as The Alien Zone, is an anthology of four tales told by a mortician about the lives of the recently and deservedly deceased. As always, Lord Blood-Rah will be spicing up the mix with plenty of movie trailers and a Cranial Cavity Search.
CINEMA INSOMNIA WITH MR. LOBO presents INVASION OF THE NEPTUNE MEN (1961)
Wednesday (04/12). 9:00 P.M. (ET) CINEMA INSOMNIA WITH MR. LOBO presents INVASION OF THE NEPTUNE MEN (1961). Sonny Chiba stars as a mysterious superhero called Space Chief, who flies around in a rocket-propelled car. The Neptune Men are a group of slow-moving aliens wearing nose-cone-shaped space helmets that look like suppositories, who are attempting to invade Earth in rocket ships that look like evil crab cakes. Can Space Chief and some annoying Japanese kids running around in short shorts thwart their nefarious plans?

Thursday (04/13). 9:00 P.M. (ET) THE DARK VAULT OF PUBLIC DOMAIN with Uncle Pete and his sidekick El Vato presents TRACK OF THE MOON BEAST (1976). After a beefy young mineralogist (Chase Cordell) gets boinked in the head by a meteor fragment, he is transformed into a hideous lizard-like monster whenever the moon comes out. Badly paced and badly shot, with a badly constructed story and a mostly talentless cast playing cardboard characters, its one saving feature is that soon-to-be-famous Rick Baker designed the beast.
NIGHT CHILLS THEATRE presents MISSILE TO THE MOON (1958)
Friday (04/14). 9:00 P.M. (ET) NIGHT CHILLS THEATRE with Vincent Grimmly and Phydeaux presents MISSILE TO THE MOON (1958). This remake of the 1953 classic Cat-Women of the Moon is even cheesier than the original. It has everything that fans of bad B-movies could possibly ask for. Voluptuous moon women, ridiculous rock men, and a hairy spider puppet — not to mention plywood sets and lunar footage shot at Vasquez Rocks in Los Angeles County (which also doubled for Tibet in Werewolf of London).
ALTERNATIVE REALITIES with Dr. Sigmund Zoid presents INVASION OF THE BEE GIRLS (1973)
Saturday (04/15). 9:00 P.M. (ET) ALTERNATIVE REALITIES returns to The Vortexx with a brand-new episode! Sluggo and Dwight are nowhere to be found, so Zoid decides to have a “guys night in” in this fun episode entitled The Man Show. The movie he is hosting is definitely one that will appeal to all manly men. It’s INVASION OF THE BEE GIRLS (1973) and it’s about a mad scientist (Anitra Ford) who creates an army of deadly beauties that seduce their hapless male victims to death. Beefy William Smith plays the government agent trying to get to the bottom of things, while Playboy playmate Victoria Vetri plays the sexy lab librarian who joins forces with him. We’re not giving anything away by telling you that Victoria gets naked before the movie is over.
MISTY BREW’S CREATURE FEATURE presents The Vortexx premiere of BLACK MAGIC (1949)
Sunday (04/16). 9:00 P.M. (ET) MISTY BREW’S CREATURE FEATURE presents The Vortexx premiere of BLACK MAGIC (1949) aka Cagliostro. Orson Welles makes his Vortexx debut tonight as Cagliostro, a carnival magician and hypnotist in pre-Revolutionary France who uses his powers to gain wealth, fame, and prestige and to carry out a complicated revenge scheme. Based on a novel by Alexandre Dumas, the story is told in flashback by Alexandre to his son Alexandre Jr (Raymond Burr). Note: Our show will be followed by an encore presentation of Wednesday’s SCREAMING SOUP review of the 2004 horror-comedy SATAN’S LITTLE HELPER.

DUAL MOVIE REVIEW: Satanic (2016)

EDITOR’s NOTE: As I was reviewing some articles for publication, I noticed that both John Roisland and Dixielord had both reviewed the same Netflix movie: Satanic. What’s more, both of them felt the same as I did. Therefore, House of Tortured Souls presents our first ever dual review. Enjoy!

SATANIC is a 2016 film about four friends who get messed up with the devil. Or that would be the nice way of putting it.
First, I must say, I do enjoy movies about the occult and dark magic, so when i saw the title of this film, I thought, ‘Wow, pretty balls move to go right for the throat’ . You’ve gotta have a solid winner and know what you’re doing to use a major or strong word for your title. For example, The Exorcist , Titanic, and, hell, even Gremlins used their bold titles, and they owned them. Sadly enough, Satanic did not.
The story begins with the four friends stopping into a occult store while in LA only to piss off an employee and get chased out. The four follow the store employee home after he gets off work and find the center of what appears to be a ritual killing of a young woman.
After being seen and chased away from the property, they run into the should have been sacrificed girl the next day at a coffee shop. They hang out and talk to her, eventually inviting her back to their hotel, where they drink some beers and talk occult until the girl apparently curses them after she paints a Penatgram on the wall and then slits her own throat.
With this now supposed Satanic curse on them, weird things start to happen around as well as to our four bumbling idiots. I’m sorry, I’m usually not one to tear up on a film, and I have seen much worse. The film from the get go has a made for television feel, almost like your watching a series. The movie itself really doesn’t go anywhere, and its a shame because it really could have. It had a lot of potential.
There was at the very end one of those, “Oh yea, huh,” moments and that was about it. The acting was god awful and had a few decent special F/X in it. It just felt like they were rushed almost. Like they had the ideas, but forgot to add a few.
So this, now playing on Netflix streaming, was unfortunately one that I had hoped would have been much better, but was merely something to kill time with. And this, from the producers of The Walking Dead, sorry guys.

Satanic Panic was all the rage when I was a teenager. It seemed there was always reports of mutilated pets, and graveyard gatherings. Now we know that for the most part the Satanic Panic was just urban legends blown out of proportion. Still, that’s no reason we can’t make films about them. Ti West delved into Satanic Panic with The House of the Devil, and just this year we went old school satanic with The Witch. Now the new film Satanic explores satanism as an evil force while using the panic years as a device to drive the film.
Be careful of looking for doors, you might find one – Satanic
Satanic, which stars Sarah Hyland (Modern Family) and is directed by Jeffrey Hunt (The Vampire Diaries) is the story of four friends on their way to Coachella, who decide to make a detour to visit sites involved in the Satanic Panic, including the Manson murders. Always looking for a new thrill the visit a magic store and follow the cashier home, hoping to witness a magic ceremony. They stumble upon what they believe to be a human sacrifice. They interrupt the ritual, which any good horror movie fan can tell you, isn’t a smart thing to do. Attempting to help the young girl, they get more than they bargained for and the fun quickly turns into fear. They follow the girl down a path that leads straight to hell, or at least a reasonable facsimile.
I found myself enjoying the film throughout most of the early part of the movie. Alice, played by Sophie Dalah, is suitably creepy and any time shes on screen it’s fun to watch. There isn’t a whole lot new to the story but it is executed fairly well. There’s only one real gory scene, but its very bloody and comes out of nowhere. The fact that up till then the film is pretty bloodless makes it more shocking and builds up expectations that the last half of the film will be a monster.

Some Satanic spoilers ahead!
And that’s where Satanic fumbles. Instead of building on the insanity of the hotel room scene it dials it back. There’s still an intensity, but it always falls flat, and we go back to it being a bloodless film. Instead of seeing our four teens picked off one by one in a gruesome manner, they just disappear. It becomes repetitive, and well, you just know each time whats about to happen.
The scene in the hotel room held out such great promise, not just with the gore, but with the dialogue. With talk of doors, and the labyrinth beyond, you are almost expecting cenobites or at least something really esoteric and horrifying. Sadly Satanic doesn’t deliver on this. Alice says “Hell is a beautiful confusion, and there’s pain”. It’s a great line, but I just felt let down with the final revelation of what hell actually was.
These teens don’t take the Satanic Panic seriously
There’s a lot wrong with Satanic, but it is still watchable. I think with a better ending it could have been a really good little film. But it is what it is, and what it is, is just meh.it’s a good for a rental or a boring day, Netflix rental, but I wouldn’t purchase it. A generous 5 out of 10 stars.
